Job Summary
Neuroscience RPA seeks a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to assist in all aspects of the NeuroBank, a neuroscience-focused biobank. After 12 months of satisfactory performance and training, this employee may be eligible for a full-time University of Kentucky staff position or continue as a STEPS employee.
This person will assist the program manager in consenting patients, collecting and processing human samples, and managing clinical and regulatory data. This job provides training in consenting patients for clinical research and interacting with residents, nurses, physicians, and clinical coordinators. Training also includes benchtop skills for processing human samples (ie. blood, CSF, saliva, and urine), isolating various fractions from biofluids, deidentified sample label making, sample storage, and opportunities to learn data entry in clinical databases such as RedCap and OnCore, to contribute human samples to ongoing neuroscience-related research projects at UK.
The position heavily involves:
- screening of potential neurological research subjects
- consenting of research subjects (the process in which a patient is educated about the risks, benefits, and alternatives of a given procedure or intervention)
- this is a patient/physician/medical staff-facing role
- traveling across the medical campus to meet/consent patients and retrieve biospecimens
- processing samples
- daily data entry/spreadsheet maintenance
On rare occasions, this also includes:
- being in the operating room of deep brain stimulation surgeries to retrieve several types of samples
- start time of 6 AM for pre-operative patients being prepped to undergo surgery
- staying until 5:30 PM, and occasionally coming in on the weekends to retrieve, process, and store a sample
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
Required Education: Bachelor of Science
Lab Skills/Knowledge: Pipetting, Benchtop experience, Centrifuge
Software Skills/Knowledge: Excel, EPIC, RedCap, OnCore, Outlook, Teams
Abilities: Good interpersonal communication skills, working within a team setting.
Consenting/clinical research or phlebotomy experience is a bonus.
