JOB SUMMARY:
The Assistant Professor of Forestry is a tenure-track 12-month position in the College of Agriculture, Communities, and the Environment (CACE) at Kentucky State University. The position will be a combination of research (50%), teaching (25%), and extension (25%). Time and effort distribution will be allocated accordingly.
The Assistant Professor of Forestry is a tenure-track 12-month position in the CACE that will develop a nationally recognized applied research program focusing on areas such as sustainable forest management, agroforestry (forest farming), forest recreation, invasive plant species, forest health, forest hydrology, and forest technology (unmanned aerial vehicles/drones). The position will also develop forest management Extension and outreach programing, as well as teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses, such as agroforestry, population and community ecology, and agricultural statistics. The position will lead the McIntire-Stennis project at KSU and mentor graduate and undergraduate students in research projects.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Develop a nationally recognized applied research program focusing on sustainable forest management, including emphasis in one or more of the following areas of expertise: forest management, agroforestry (forest farming), forest recreation, invasive plant species, forest health, forest hydrology, and forest technology (unmanned aerial vehicles/drones). Assist in the management and coordination of the 300-acre KSU Environmental Education and Research Center as a research, Extension, and teaching resource. Teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses, such as agroforestry, population and community ecology, and agricultural statistics, depending upon current needs and areas of expertise. Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Candidates must demonstrate the potential for collaborative, integrated, multi-disciplinary research, granting, publishing, and stakeholder involvement. Research and outreach experiences in one or more of the following areas: silviculture practices, forest management, invasive plant management, habitat restoration, forest health and brush management, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and ecological services, forest water quality/hydrology, and forest technology (unmanned aerial vehicles/drones). Preference will be given to candidates with a record of excellence in research, Extension, and teaching and the ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Candidates should have a strong background in statistics and related programs such as R, JMP, or SAS. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in the university setting. Ability to work under deadlines.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
This position does not have supervisory responsibility.
OTHER DUTIES:
The position will conduct other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Ph.D. degree in Forestry or related area required.
Licensing and Certifications:
Valid drivers license.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Must be able to travel, primarily in-state (20%). May occasionally need to move light equipment and carry supplies, publications, and needed equipment for demonstration and training programs. Must be able to work outdoors and in remote/rural locations.
