Functions of Assigned Duties
This position is located in the DoD/VA Joint Venture Hospital.
Performs LPN duties in Orthopedic clinic setting: Assists the orthopedic provider when performing minor procedures such as the removal of foreign bodies. Provides instruction and information on procedures to be performed. Maintains safeguards, monitors equipment for proper operation and recognizes when changes in equipment or procedures might result in increased risks and adapts methods to prevent such risks. Assists with post-operative braces and appliances such as outriggers, thumb spicas, and other specialized devices.
Strictly adheres to established aseptic procedures during procedures.
Performs basic orthopedic clinic duties: executes reception desk duties. Reviews patient medical record for previous exams and other pertinent data for provider's reference during current exam. Schedules and provides preoperative instructions/information for surgical procedures. Documents patient education provided. Maintains operative records of all surgical procedures performed in the surgical suite.
Receives phone calls and requests for assistance or information from patients, administrative support staff, nurses and providers. Provides information requested or refers caller(s) to appropriate agency or section for assistance in accordance with established protocols. Ensures all needed records, x-rays and medical reports are available to the provider. Schedules follow-up patient visits. Prepares and reestablishes patient treatment rooms between patients and maintains orthopedic medications in a ready state in multiple treatment areas. Instructs preoperative patients regarding admission procedures. Logs patient into MHS Genesis to ensure workload accountability.
Performs clinic duties promptly and efficiently. With rare exception, effectively monitors patients for reactions to medications and promptly notifies nurse and/or provider in case of adverse reaction.
Routinely interacts with patients and staff.
Manages and maintains clinic equipment and procedures.
Assists with initial casts by holding injured/fractured areas, handling materials or equipment to the provider, or applying the cast materials.
Draws up injection medications as prescribed by the provider and preps the injection site. Instructs patients on the proper care of casts. Ensures cast room, surgical suite and treatment rooms are adequately stocked with supplies.
Promptly notifies the provider of any unusual occurrence or problems during application and removal of casts. Teaches patients and family members how patients should manage cast care. Effectively charts in the patient's record all patient care accomplished.
Identifies and responds to both existing and potential emergency situations by initiating corrective treatment and resuscitative measures. Transports patients via wheelchair or gurney and/or accompanies ambulatory patients in need of assistance to various areas within the facility. Teaches patients and family members how to perform simple tests and how to care for themselves. Provides accurate input for patient care planning
Perform and execute phlebotomy for specific orthopedic procedure. Must also have the knowledge of anatomy and orthopedic procedures/injections.

Pay:
Competitive salary and regular salary increases. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications, or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade).
Paid Time Off:
37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience.
Parental Leave:
After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.
Child Care Subsidy:
After 60 days of employment, full time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for eligible children up to the monthly maximum of $416.66
