The Sr. Legal Ethics Counsel provides guidance to members of the Bar about their ethical obligations under the District of Columbia Rules of Professional Conduct and provides staff assistance to the Legal Ethics Program (LEP) including the Legal Ethics Committee (LEC) and the Rules of Professional Conduct Review Committee (Rules Review Committee).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responds to high-volume, time sensitive, and often complex requests for legal ethics advice. Conducts necessary legal research and consults with the Legal Ethics Program and/or the Legal Ethics Committee chair. Makes appropriate referrals where legal ethics issues are not presented.
  • Serves as staff counsel to the Legal Ethics Committee and Rules of Professional Conduct Review Committee. Provides scheduling, agenda setting and meeting management support to the Rules Review subcommittees. Researches and drafts subcommittee memoranda, reports, and recommendations.
  • Researches and drafts informal opinion letters and memoranda on questions arising under the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct.
  • Provides staff expertise on legal ethics issues to other D.C. Bar committees, Regulation Counsel programs, other Bar departments, the Board of Governors, and external constituents such as the media, state bars, and task forces.
  • Develops materials for and teaches continuing legal education courses on topics related to legal ethics. Develops materials for and participates as panelist offering legal ethics expertise for internal constituents, local and national audiences, the judiciary, law students, and others.
  • Periodically writes the “Speaking of Ethics” monthly feature for The Washington Lawyer. Writes ethics blogs or columns for D.C. Bar media platforms and assists in editing and developing other legal ethics content.
  • Assists in drafting or editing annual and committee report and in developing and updating legal ethics webpage content.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • J.D. from an accredited ABA law school.
  • Experience as a practicing attorney.
  • An active member of the D.C. Bar.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be detail oriented and deadline driven. Able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Must work well in a team environment and be able to interact with Bar members, volunteers, vendors, the public and Bar employees.
  • Must work well under pressure, possess excellent organizational abilities, and able to manage several priorities in a day.
  • Must be adaptable, creative, and self-motivated.
  • Ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
  • Must obtain and submit a certificate of discipline from each jurisdiction where the candidate is admitted.
  • May not engage in the private practice of law, although a reasonable period of transition after hire may be approved.
  • Any outside volunteer activity or employment that involves or may involve a conflict of interest, could interfere with or negatively affect the job performance of the Sr. Legal Ethics Counsel, or could be a source of embarrassment for the Office of Regulation Counsel or the D.C. Bar will not be permitted. Any outside volunteer activities or employment must be approved in writing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct and experience in the area of legal ethics.
  • Experience teaching continuing legal education courses, lawyer trainings, or similar programs.

This position is currently a hybrid position, with days worked in the office and days worked remotely. The hybrid status of this position may change at any time subject to the Bar’s discretion.
