Health System Division Chief, Hematology and Oncology


Tower Health and the McGlinn Cancer Institute announce a national search for the Division Chief of Hematology and Oncology for the Tower Health Comprehensive Cancer Care program. The new Division Chief will enrich the longstanding and distinguished reputation of the Cancer Care program while leveraging the synergies within the McGlinn Cancer Institute. The Division Chief will be a nationally prominent physician with a history of program development and the experience and skills to lead the Division in an era when diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities in cancer disease have never been more promising. They will provide strategic vision and leadership for the growth and expansion of clinical, academic, and administrative activities of the Division. The successful candidate will further enhance an environment that has a strong sense of community and collaboration, with over 44 active and ongoing Phase II-IV clinical trials, led by over 70 Cancer Center members. NRG Oncology has ranked McGlinn Cancer Institute in the top 10 of 220 centers in the United States for accrual to clinical trials.


The ideal candidate will partner with Tower Health’s senior leadership in strategic pursuit of the next level of excellence among elite cancer centers in the country and work to execute the Cancer Institute’s strategic goals. The Division Chief will lead the recruitment of world-class cancer providers and support staff. Leadership and oversight for clinical research, and clinical operations of the Cancer Center, including the setting of aspirational goals, developing avenues to achievement, and meeting clinical and academic milestones are key responsibilities for the Division Chief. The McGlinn Cancer Institute is a leader in a regional care network serving patients from four counties in eastern Pennsylvania, and they will represent the Cancer Institute in local, statewide, and regional collaborations.

 

The Division Chief will identify and promote synergies within the Department of Medicine, McGlinn Cancer Institute, the Tower Health Hematology/Oncology Fellowship program, and Tower Health to further shared goals and support initiatives whenever possible. A can-do attitude and optimistic perspective on innovation will be essential for success in this group of institutions committed to ongoing improvement. The ideal candidate is a dynamic leader with demonstrated outstanding clinical, academic and leadership skills.


The Division Chief will have high emotional intelligence and be a consensus-oriented individual who displays “respectful courage” and is highly influential in their ability to encourage people forward. A highly collaborative methodology is essential to advance and perpetuate physician relations that build on their key roles as both partners and customers. They will be seen as a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion in all areas of the institution.


Key Goals of the Division Chief, Hematology and Oncology:

  • Collaborate with physicians and leadership to create a clear vision for the Division, one that continues to inspire physician engagement, produces growth and innovation in patient care, and elevates the stature of the Division regionally and nationally.
  • Expand the Division’s research activity and metrics, taking advantage of the exceptional intellectual resources of Tower Health, McGlinn Cancer Institute, and the Drexel School of Medicine.
  • Elevate the stature of the Division’s fellowship program in hematology/oncology and retention of trainees as future physicians, NCI funding for training grants, and evaluation of outcomes for program improvement.
  • Recruit a diverse high caliber, high impact provider team, provide necessary leadership and support to ensure provider development, retention, and promotion.

Experiences and Professional Qualifications:

Qualified candidates must hold a medical degree DO, MD or MD/PhD. Candidates must be board certified and eligible for licensure and clinical practice in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Candidates must be eligible for a faculty appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level in the Drexel School of Medicine.


The ideal candidate is expected to be a highly respected physician, possess dynamic leadership skills and administrative expertise, and to lead in a manner that supports and contributes to the success and unity of the health system, department, Cancer Institute, hospital and its affiliates, and the medical school. Additionally, the Division Chief will:

  • Bring a proven track record of progressive leadership experience within a matrixed organization and the ability to integrate comprehensive hematology and oncology services to meet the needs of the expanding service line.
  • Articulate a compelling vision for the future of the Division of Hematology and Oncology within a highly regarded academic health system and to the community.
  • Demonstrate expertise building strong internal and external relationships, with a proven track record of working collaboratively with physicians, physician leaders, diverse management teams, and aligned partnerships to support the implementation of clinical programs and quality initiatives.
  • Be a "systems thinker" who demonstrates an understanding, innovative thinking, and an expertise with various operating entities of an integrated healthcare system.
  • Be a consensus-oriented individual who displays "respectful courage" and is highly influential in their ability to encourage people development.
  • Understand the organizational landscape and be able to anticipate critical issues, opportunities, and threats in the foreseeable future.
  • Demonstrate the ability to drive the implementation of strategic and annual operating plans that ensure people, systems, and processes are coordinated, integrated, and aligned.
  • Demonstrate experience in aligning, expanding, and sustaining innovative quality, safety, and performance improvement initiatives that achieve superior clinical quality, favorable financial outcomes, and high patient/physician/employee satisfaction.
  • Develop and mentor the careers of physicians/fellows and be skilled in the recruitment of new faculty to build high performing cohesive teams and cultivate a pipeline of next generation leaders within Tower Health System.
  • Collaborate across institutions in the continued development of the clinical enterprise to foster and uniquely broaden multidisciplinary clinical education and research innovations.
  • Promote an environment of accountability and continuous performance improvement by establishing and monitoring concrete performance measures to drive achievement of targeted outcomes.
