Sr. Controls Engineer

This position is located at the PDQ Manufacturing, Inc. facility in De Pere, WI and is primarily responsible for performing electrical engineering in the research, development, and support of VWS vehicle wash products. Duties include concept generation and evaluation, design development, analysis, test planning and conduction. In addition, component specification and selection, and product documentation. These duties are conducted under the guidance of Engineering Management and other senior engineering staff, and will at times involve leadership of projects.
What You'll Do:
Design and support low-voltage (up to 600 VAC) electrical control panels and systems including power distribution, motion control, and sensor/actuator application.
Design elegant solutions that maximize value for VWS customers by considering factors such as feasibility, risk, component cost, assembly time, reliability, and quality.
Handle changes and potential problems related to assigned projects and closely collaborate with stakeholders including Purchasing, Manufacturing, Engineering, Marketing, Technical Support, and Sales throughout the development, release, and support of VWS products.
Initiate, conduct, and document design reviews.
Review your individual and others' designs to ensure compliance focusing on engineering principles, regulatory standards, functional safety, company standards, product definition, and customer requirements.
Design solutions in accordance with project definition, and applicable national/regional safety and regulatory requirements such as NEC (NFPA-70), NFPA-79, and the CE Machinery Directive.
Develop component and system requirements and test plans. Lead and conduct testing to verify design compliance with specifications. Participate in a hands-on manner in the building of prototypes and test fixtures.
Generate product documents needed to communicate designs, including but not limited to one-line drawings, parts lists, bills-of-material (BOM), electrical schematics, electrical wiring point-to-point diagrams, engineering design specifications, CAD solid-model parts and assemblies, and engineering drawings.
Participate in ISO 9001 quality processes from establishing customer's requirements, through releasing products for sale, to supporting installed products.
Participate in the research and testing of new components and technologies. Maintain awareness of changing technology and standards and evaluate these for adoption into new designs and products.
Utilize both virtual and physical engineering tools to evaluate feasibility of ideas and concepts and generate analysis to support recommendations.
Perform in-house activities related to external product compliance validation, including being an MTR (manufacturer technical representative) for PDQ's UL 508A panel shop as well as participating in 3rd-party assessments of PDQ systems, including UL and CE tests.
Demonstrate and encourage safe work practices in all activities.
What You'll Bring:
7+ years of experience working in design of electrically operated machinery and/or industrial control systems is required.
Proficiency with electrical load calculation, electrical component selection, safe electrical design practices, NEC and IEC requirements, UL/CSA, CE EMC and Machinery Safety Directive. Experience with UL 508A is required. Experience with the NEC and NFPA-79 is desired.
Proficiency in the application of electrical components including sensors (proximity, photo eye, ultrasonic), fluid control (pumping/valving), AC induction motors (208V to 575V), variable-frequency drives, and various wiring/cabling methods
Proficiency with interpreting and generating electrical schematics.
Experience in CAD and proficiency with generating engineering drawings. Proficiency with AutoCAD 2D/Electrical and SolidWorks 3D-modeling is desired.
Good electrical troubleshooting skills and work methods implementing safety on live industrial equipment is required. Experience with failure analysis of electrical designs and experience of methods for improving those designs.
Minimum of an associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology and equivalent experience considered.
Nice to Have:
Experience with industrial PLC systems.
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering preferred.
