The mission of the Mayor's Office of Youth Engagement & Advancement is to uplift young voices in decision making processes and help advance the lives of young people across Boston through programming and resource connecting. OYEA believes it is crucial to have young voices actively engaged in the policies and decisions that impact their lives, and our mission is to provide the platform for them to do so.

All Boston youth should have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. We aim to serve as a central hub connecting young people to these resources and opportunities across City Hall and in their communities. We also value the youth workers who are on the ground with Boston's young people each day, and aim to provide the necessary support and development opportunities to uplift their work. Our goal is to create and support spaces that empower our next generation to become community leaders and agents of change.

In partnership with the Executive Director of the Mayor's Office of Youth Engagement & Advancement, the Deputy Director will lead operational, planning and evaluation work, manage contracts, pursue funding relationships and identify strategic opportunities. As a key leader in the department, the Deputy Director plays a backbone role in infrastructure, providing guidance to the team about internal City procedures and ensuring a synergistic external approach across programmatic areas.

Responsibilities :
  • Support the Director to manage and monitor the daily operations of the department to ensure efficient and effective management of staff, finances and partner relations.
  • Support the Director in the management of contracts and contractor relationships with flexibility and integrity.
  • Lead major initiatives within the Office to ensure the department meets its fiscal year goals.
  • Develop partnerships and liaise with research partners to evaluate city youth programming and facilitate continuous improvement.
  • Pursue funding opportunities to develop and support new and existing OYEA initiatives, as well as to support City-endorsed partner programs where appropriate, including researching and writing grants.
  • Supervise Youth Engagement Coordinators and other OYEA staff as needed.
  • Support Director to identify, launch and evaluate strategic initiatives and programming in support of the overarching strategic youth development goals.
  • Assist in the development of strategic plans and work plans for the department.
  • Conduct programmatic and policy research and develop policy memos and program proposals for internal and external purposes.
  • Liaise with the Mayors Office, Press, Digital, Advance and Speechwriting offices, other Cabinets and Department Heads to ensure City communications and initiatives align with equitable youth development & engagement principles.
  • Develop protocols and train OYEA team and city colleagues on effective youth engagement strategies.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications :
  • Must have four (4) to five (5) or more years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the youth development field, public policy, public administration, partnership engagement, and program/policy development.
  • Must have two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Completion of a Masters degree preferred.
  • Experience with grant management, budget management and grants accounting.
  • Experience managing contracts and with contractor oversight.
  • Experience working with, and facilitating conversations among, diverse partners from public, private, and non-profit sectors.
  • Must have excellent planning, organization, and project management skills and previous experience in program evaluation.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement difficult collaborative projects/partnerships with multiple stakeholders and move critical efforts forward in a respectful way that delivers improved support for divested communities/clients.
  • Must have excellent team and consensus building attributes and dynamic leadership qualities.
  • Ability to promote and implement continuous process improvements and document process management protocols.
  • Experience implementing mission-driven programmatic and policy objectives with a focus on increasing access to healthy foods in underserved communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work respectfully among individuals with diverse cultural, political, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Excellent research, analytical and communication skills.
  • Should exercise stellar judgment, develop and implement strategies with minimal oversight and demonstrate tenacity, drive, and self-awareness.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing racial justice in the City of Boston.
  • High level of proficiency in the following programs: Google Suite and Microsoft Office, including Excel and Google Sheets. Survey tools such as Google Forms, Survey Monkey, Survey Gizmo, and Canva, etc.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
