Job Summary and Qualifications

This Job Description for the Staff RN on Labor and Delivery provides criteria for evaluation of the Registered Nurse working in the Staff RN position. The Staff RN assigned to the Labor and Delivery Unit cares for adolescent, adult and neonate patients. 

What you will do in this role?

  • Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for assigned patients.
  • Reassess patients on an on-going manner.
  • Responsible for adhering to the hospital policies and procedures.
  • Participates in activities to plan, measure, assess and improve the quality of patient care.
  • Responsible for the application and advanced interpretation of maternal/fetal monitoring.
  • Performs vaginal exams and identifies: a) presentation, b) dilatation, c) Station, d) effacement
  • L&D nurses are responsible for circulating for Cesarean Sections and Tubal Ligations.
  • Assists physicians with procedures, as appropriate.
  • Assumes the responsibility of charging the unit, as needed.
  • Responsible for maintaining customer friendly atmosphere and compliance with “Refection of Excellence” standards.
  • Models and reinforces behavior consistent with goals for teaching the patient, communicates patient status to appropriate member of the healthcare team, and provides support to the family, as needed.
  • Scanning supplies form P.O.U. area and entering charges for the patient.
  • Responsible for scanning patient armbands and administering medications via Emar
  • Responsible for entering orders via Epom.

What qualifications you will need:

  • One year of Labor and Delivery required
  • Acquires and maintains current fetal monitoring certification through AWHONN
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support Course (BLS or BCLS) and Certification
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association Advanced Life Support Course (ALS or ACLS) and Certification
  • NRP
  • Registered Nurse
  • Registered Nurse Diploma
