Postdoctoral research associates – NOAA/AOML
2 days ago
Overview We are seeking highly motivated postdoctoral research associates with strong backgrounds in numerical modeling and analysis of large-scale ocean and atmosphere datasets. Successful candidates will join a research team at NOAA/AOML to use observations and ocean and/or coupled atmosphere-ocean models to study one of the following topics: Responsibilities Topic-1: Investigate interannual-to-decadal variability of the South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (SAMOC). Objectives include exploring the impact of eddies in Ocean General Circulation Models (OGCMs) on SAMOC variability and quantifying the relationship of SAMOC with the Southern Hemisphere westerlies and the Agulhas leakage. Collaboration with NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) is available. Topic-2: Examine the southward returning pathways and vertical structure of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and their contributions to meridional ocean heat transport. Tasks include reconstructing realistic southward returning flow pathways of the AMOC through robust diagnostic simulations, exploring these pathways, and examining AMOC impacts on global SSTs. Approaches include using hydrographic observations, CMIP5 outputs, and model experiments with NCAR CESM/CCSM and an intermediate complexity model. Qualifications Required: Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Science, or a related field; demonstrated ability to publish results in peer-reviewed literature. Desirable: knowledge of Unix and Fortran; ability to run ocean or coupled atmosphere-ocean models. Experience with the GFDL Modular Ocean Model (MOM) is desirable for Topic-1; experience with NCAR CESM/CCSM is desirable for Topic-2, but not required. Positions Available Topic-1) Postdoctoral Associate: South Atlantic MOC Variability (CIMAS/UM, position #P ) (apply online) Topic-2) Postdoctoral Associate: Southward Returning Pathways of AMOC (CIMAS/UM, position #P ) (apply online) Additional postdoctoral opportunities related to AMOC are available at NOAA/AOML and UM/CIMAS. NRC Postdoctoral Research Associateship Program: Inter-Ocean Exchanges in the South Atlantic and Its Link to Global Monsoons Postdoctoral Associate: Atlantic MOC Observations (CIMAS/UM, position #P ) (apply online) Apply and Contact Please visit NOAA/AOML’s Physical Oceanography Division homepage for further information and instructions on online applications. #J-18808-Ljbffr
