Burlington, United States Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard Full time

The Broad Institute, Genomics Platform is seeking a Principal Software Engineer for our Data Analysis & Operations team. This position will be instrumental in the development of our high‑scale cloud‑based orchestration platform for running genomics pipelines and performing data delivery. An ideal candidate will help design, build, and maintain the necessary infrastructure, as well as coordinate and lead the technical activities needed to support exciting new projects on the platform, for both internal and external stakeholders. This fast‑paced role sits at the intersection of engineering, science, and business. A successful candidate will work effectively across multiple departments, partners, and with our community of computational biologists and medical/cancer geneticists. We’re looking for a team player who thrives on opportunity, adapts to change, and has a passion to improve themselves, their teammates, and our partners. At Broad, our collaborators include large‑scale institutions—government, industry, academic, and philanthropic—that partner with us to generate clinical and genomic data, build new algorithms, and make it all available to researchers through our open‑source analysis platform. We partner with organizations across the biomedical ecosystem and scientists in our local MIT, Harvard, and affiliated hospital neighborhood. Everything that goes on at the Broad involves specialized software. Software engineers create advanced algorithms, deliver solid infrastructure, and high‑quality portals. Minimum Years of Experience & Other Qualifications Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science or related field with 10+ years of software development experience. Proven ability to deliver reliable, scalable, and maintainable systems. Ability to design, write, and read technical documents. Track record of delivering (or over‑delivering) on time. Comfortable presenting and communicating technical solutions to non‑technical client stakeholders. Capable of understanding and translating technical requirements. Ability to perform effectively in a fast‑paced environment. Ability to learn new technologies and domains. A focus on outcomes and customer success. Skills / Technical Knowledge / Certification Requirements Experience with cloud environments (e.g., AWS, GCP). Familiarity with Apache Airflow a plus. Experience integrating complex systems together. Experience with multiple programming languages (especially Python and Java). Experience working with relational databases and writing SQL queries. Experience troubleshooting and debugging complex systems. Experience with security practices and within regulatory environments. Excellent communication skills and the ability to perform effectively in a fast‑paced environment required. Must be able to handle a variety of tasks, solve problems with numerous and complex variables, and shift priorities rapidly. Pay Range: $150,000.00/yr – $210,000.00/yr. The expected base pay range for this position is based on a 40‑hour per week schedule. Broad provides pay ranges representing its reasonable and good faith estimate of what the organization reasonably expects to pay for a position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will vary based on factors including but not limited to relevant skills, experience, education, qualifications, and other factors permissible by law. Broad offers a comprehensive total rewards package including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance; a 401(k) retirement plan; flexible spending and health savings accounts; at least 13 paid holidays; winter closure; paid time off; parental and family care leave; and an employee assistance program. The Broad Institute is an equal‑opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, national origin, religion, age, color, sex, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by local, state, or federal laws, rules, or regulations.
