Operating Maintenance Engineer I City of Minneapolis Position Description The Minneapolis Convention Center (MCC) hosts more than 300 events annually and serves as a vibrant downtown community hub. In this role, you will be a hospitality hero, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the MCC, a 1.5‑million‑square‑foot building. Work Location This position works on‑site only. Salary Anticipated salary: $37.24 per hour, depending on qualifications. Differentials Monday through Friday Shift Differential – $1.93 per hour for shifts between 11:00 am and 6:00 am. Saturday & Sunday Shift Differential – 1st Shift (6:00 am‑1:59 pm): $1.63 per hour; 2nd Shift (2:00 pm‑8:59 pm): $2.17 per hour; 3rd Shift (9:00 pm‑5:59 am): $2.47 per hour. Job Duties And Responsibilities Operate, maintain and repair the 109 air handling units, 69 fan coil units, and numerous exhaust and transfer fans. Operate, maintain and repair the high‑pressure steam system used for building heat and commercial kitchen steam. Provide essential support to maintain optimal HVAC system functions. Perform diagnostics on the Building Automation System to ensure proper temperature in exhibition halls, auditorium, ballrooms, meeting rooms, concourses, and office spaces. Ensure proper operation of plumbing systems, including 350+ touchless toilets, urinals, flushometers, soap dispensers, faucets, waste lines, dishwashers, and automatic drinking fountains. Inspect emergency generators and fire sprinkler pumps; perform system safety checks and load testing. Manage fire extinguisher inventories and assist with annual testing of hundreds of extinguishers. Maintain and adjust operable wall panels in meeting rooms. Repair overhead roll‑up doors, battery‑powered lifts, forklifts, Cushman tugs, and articulating lifts. Maintain refrigeration units including ice machines, walk‑in coolers/freezers, and drinking fountains. Troubleshoot and maintain low‑voltage building automation systems. Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly/yearly). Conduct welding, soldering, brazing, and metal fabrication as required. Estimate and record time, materials, and ordering; maintain logs of temperatures, pressures, and equipment status. Working Conditions Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods. Exposure to high voltage equipment, chemicals, fumes, dust, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, heights (rooftops and catwalks), poor lighting, burn hazards, and loud noises. Required Qualifications 3 years post‑high‑school education, specialized training, trades apprenticeship or equivalent in HVAC control systems. At least 3 years related experience with a minimum of 1 year holding a boiler license. State of MN Class 2‑C Boiler License. Submit a copy of the license with your application. Selection Process The process includes a rating of relevant education and experience (100%). A passing score of 70% on each step places a candidate on the eligible list. The City reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process. Drug / Alcohol Testing And Medical Examination All applicants must pass a pre‑employment drug and alcohol test and medical exam upon a conditional offer. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Knowledge of computer operating systems and networking. Strong mechanical aptitude; ability to work independently and with diverse teams. Exceptional customer relation skills. Working knowledge of electrical systems. Extensive HVAC troubleshooting skills. Familiarity with computerized building automation systems. Proficient with tools, methods, and equipment for mechanical operation and maintenance of a large public facility. Ability to perform welding, soldering, and brazing. Reading equipment blueprints and schematics. Physical capability to lift up to 70 lb and maneuver heavier items; ability to walk or stand for long periods.
