Engineer 1 - Power Systems Design and Construction

Position Summary

The Engineer 1 position is an entry-level role requiring 0-5 years of related experience and an accredited bachelor’s degree in engineering. This role involves supporting the design, estimation, construction, and maintenance of power-related systems by applying foundational engineering principles, industry standards, and software applications. The Engineer 1 will collaborate with cross-functional teams, contractors, and maintenance crews to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient solutions while contributing to the continuous improvement of design standards and processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineering Design & Construction Support:
  • Apply engineering processes, design criteria, and software tools to develop designs for power systems.
  • Prepare construction specifications and transmit construction packages for project execution.
  • Generate cost estimates and material lists for projects to support planning and budgeting.
  • Contractor Oversight:
  • Provide guidance, quality assurance, and oversight for contractor-delivered designs and construction packages.
  • Conduct reviews to ensure compliance with Southern Company and industry standards.
  • Safety & Compliance:
  • Promote a safe work environment by adhering to and enforcing safety-first principles.
  • Ensure designs and construction solutions comply with relevant standards and criteria.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:
  • Understand and engage with internal departments involved in design, construction, and maintenance.
  • Coordinate effectively with plant staff, design engineering teams, and vendors.
  • Process and Standards Improvement:
  • Support the development of design practices, work processes, and system standards.
  • Provide recommendations for enhancing planning, design, and operational workflows.
  • Operational Support:
  • Assist construction and maintenance teams with day-to-day operations and issue resolution.

Skills & Expertise Required

  • Introductory knowledge of engineering principles and processes.
  • Basic problem-solving and decision-making skills within established guidelines.
  • Familiarity with engineering design software and tools.
  • Strong work ethic and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to collaborate and build effective relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Awareness of safety protocols and the ability to prioritize safety in all aspects of work.

Work Environment

This role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and contractors. It may include a mix of office-based design work and occasional site visits to support construction and maintenance activities.
