Reports to:

Curriculum and Instruction Specialist

Advises:

Teachers/Asst. Teachers in the area of language arts instruction and assessment in general.

Coordinates with:

Program Director and Program Supervisors

What the Reading Specialist does:

Provides leadership and coordination in all areas of language arts and assessment.

1.1. Develops a system for identifying, as well as administering, diagnostic tests to those students requiring more extensive assessment, and prescribes teaching strategies based on the assessment.

1.2. May provide direct remedial instruction to an individual or small groups of students on short term basis.

1.3. Assists with admission interviews and tours as needed.

2.1. Acts as a resource for teaching staff in the area of language arts instruction, especially in reading.

2.2. Models instructional techniques in the classroom on a regular basis.

2.3. Trains classroom and program staff in all areas of literacy.

2.4. Trains classroom staff in the appropriate testing instruments (techniques, administration, scoring).

2.5. Assists relevant staff in the utilization of assessment data.

3.1. Coordinates all aspects of student assessment assuring that assessment is coordinated with curriculum.

3.2. Coordinates with counties and teachers the administering and scheduling of county and state tests.

3.3. Administers necessary county and state tests as needed.

3.4. Monitors budgets for library, assessment, and reading materials.

4.1. Organizes and supervises systems to maintain and develop the library.

4.2. Develops and manages a systematic approach involving staff input to determine and meet assessment needs in all major subject areas excluding language, vocational and behavioral.

4.3. Performs other duties as assigned.

CREDENTIALS AND EXPERIENCE

• Certified Reading Specialist
• Eligible for Advanced Professional Certificate in Special Education
• 3 years successful teaching experience; additional coursework or successful experience administering and interpreting diagnostic tests; additional coursework in reading remediation
