Los Angeles, United States 3DEO Full time

The Company

Located in Torrance, CA, 3DEO is one of the world’s highest volume metal 3D printing companies. It was founded on the vision to become the premier additive manufacturing (AM) service to successfully combine mass production metal 3D printing capabilities with multi-disciplinary design and product development expertise.

As innovators ourselves, 3DEO is one of the only AM service providers in the industry to offer true end-to-end services using our own proprietary technology. We hold more than 20 pending and awarded patents for our technology and automated platform, and have won awards for our material properties, capabilities and designs.

And while we pride ourselves on having reached such major milestones since our inception in 2016, our biggest differentiator is really our team.

The dedicated team at 3DEO lives and breathes the innovation process. We approach each unique project as a collaborative partnership, helping our customers launch quality products with a competitive edge. 3DEO is a trusted supplier to customers in the medical, industrial, consumer products, and aerospace industries, and is driven by our commitment to help engineers solve their toughest problems in product development.

Come join this highly collaborative and skilled team at one of the most inventive 3D printing companies in the world, and help our partners make what hasn’t been made before

The Position

3DEO is seeking a mechanical design engineer passionate about mechanical design and additive manufacturing, who enjoys collaborating directly with clients in this customer-facing role. The candidate should be highly creative and capable of partnering with 3DEO’s customers to modify or completely redesign products for optimal use of 3DEO’s additive manufacturing process (DfAM). Enjoyment in working with a diverse customer base across multiple industries is crucial, along with the ability to comfortably interact with customers. This role benefits from curiosity, familiarity with a range of manufacturing processes, and an advanced aptitude for optimizing mechanical systems. 3DEO needs a forward-thinking designer, dedicated to advancing global adoption of metal 3D printing.

This unique role is vital in 3DEO’s dynamic and consultative sales process, requiring the ability to develop conceptual designs through hand sketching and robust modeling skills that impress customers. Candidates should be comfortable and confident in their CAD and communication skills, ready to explore, justify, and present designs in real-time. Success in this role combines creative solutions with effective collaboration with the commercial team, aiming to secure more and higher-quality deals for 3DEO.

This position is ideal for those looking to join a growing team, offering significant career development opportunities. Candidates should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, thriving in a setting with skilled teammates and a variety of exciting projects.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Eye for design: Creating aesthetically pleasing parts unique to additive manufacturing, reflecting both personal aesthetic and customer preferences.
  • Rapid conceptual design in collaboration with customers and 3DEO’s engineering team. Often this high level conceptual ideation is performed live, often on-the-fly or in real time during meetings with prospects and customers.
  • Advanced CAD design: Proficiency in software like SolidWorks or Fusion 360.
  • Interpreting and contributing to production documentation, with a strong foundation in GD&T.
  • Research specific to project needs, quickly grasping customer problems to facilitate design-for-process discussions and add direct value to the customer’s intended application.
  • Staying informed about manufacturing and post-processing technologies for metal part fabrication.
  • Leading customer calls towards opportunities where 3DEO’s technology and insights add value.
  • Defining project scope for successful manufacturing by 3DEO’s internal team.
  • Project management: Handling multiple projects, prioritizing key deliverables under tight deadlines.
  • Deep commitment to customer satisfaction and responsiveness.
  • Designing parts considering our process limitations and optimizing designs for our unique capabilities.

The Candidate

Candidates should have 5+ years of experience in successful mechanical component and systems design, preferably in sectors like industrial equipment, advanced manufacturing, robotics technology, or 3D printing. Comfort in a collaborative client-facing role, with a focus on developing new business opportunities, is essential. We value the ability to build customer trust, guiding design towards improved performance while ensuring manufacturability for 3DEO’s Metal 3D Printing process and other relevant technologies.

Preferred characteristics and experience include:

  • Quick adaptation and understanding of manufacturing processes, especially 3DEO’s Metal 3D Printing process.
  • Experience in roles with revenue generation responsibility.
  • Enthusiasm for continuous learning and development in engineering, manufacturing, materials, applications, and industries.
  • Proactive, initiative-driven, results-oriented, and analytical approach.
  • Strategic thinking with attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize multiple projects.
  • Positive, collaborative attitude, working closely with sales and engineering teams.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Team player, capable of independent work and adapting to a startup’s dynamic nature.
