About:

I am currently working with a company that is an innovative aerospace firm that is at the forefront of developing cutting-edge technology platforms for space exploration and resource capture. Committed to advancing technology and innovation, we aim to unlock the vast potential of space for the benefit of humanity. Specializing in the creation of advanced large-scale space vehicles and technologies, they leverage the latest innovations to address challenges such as space debris mitigation, object capture and control, deep space exploration, and resource acquisition.

The mission is to expedite the utilization of space resources by providing unprecedented near-Earth access to natural objects. Our vehicle, currently in development, is designed for object capture and trajectory alterations, offering multi-use technology capable of orbital debris mitigation, de-orbiting, and more. This next generation of vehicles will ultimately undertake deep space missions focused on capturing and delivering asteroid resources, facilitating resource extraction for industrial and scientific research.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a Director of Spacecraft Platform to lead the strategic direction of our space exploration initiatives. In this role, you will be responsible for spearheading the development, design, and execution of spacecraft platforms. Your leadership will be instrumental in achieving the objectives of our space missions, emphasizing the importance of reliability, efficiency, and safety. You will be pivotal in the conceptualization and design of satellite structures and mechanical systems, leveraging your mechanical engineering expertise to ensure the durability, functionality, and sustainability of our satellite platforms.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Inspire and motivate team members to attain excellence, cultivating a culture of innovation and problem-solving.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership and cross-functional teams to set challenging objectives aligned with organizational goals.
  • Direct the mechanical design process for satellite structures, ensuring adherence to project specifications, industry benchmarks, and mission requirements.
  • Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles, emphasizing additive manufacturing techniques to facilitate the seamless integration of 3D printing technologies into spacecraft production.
  • Conduct comprehensive structural and thermal analyses to optimize designs for diverse space environments, including Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), and Deep Space missions.
  • Coordinate with the Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT) team to define qualification and acceptance test criteria.
  • Lead requirements definition, Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR), prototyping, and qualification testing of spacecraft platforms.
  • Collaborate with the design team to specify, select, and integrate mechanical components such as materials, fasteners, and thermal control systems into satellite configurations.
  • Ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems with other satellite subsystems by collaborating closely with cross-functional teams and defining acceptance criteria.
  • Supervise the prototyping and testing of mechanical components and systems to validate their performance and durability under space conditions.
  • Analyze test results and implement design modifications as necessary to enhance performance and reliability.
  • Manage relationships with third-party vendors and contractors in coordination with system engineering, ensuring precise definition and high-quality execution of Statements of Work (SOWs).
  • Partner with supply chain managers to identify and mitigate supply chain risks.
  • Generate detailed design documentation, including engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
  • Provide regular updates on project progress, presenting findings and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Stay informed about industry advancements and emerging technologies in satellite mechanical design, recommending and implementing process improvements as necessary.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7-10 years of hands-on experience in satellite mechanical design and analysis, with a preference for prior engagement in the aerospace sector.
  • Ideally, a proven track record in designing spacecraft, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), aircraft, helicopters, or similar vehicles.
  • Proficiency in project management methodologies, including budgeting and timeline management.
  • Familiarity with ITAR/EAR regulations, Department of Defense (DoD) contracts, and the ability to write proposals.
  • Strong command of structural and thermal analysis tools such as SolidWorks, CATIA, AutoCAD, UX, Thermal Desktop, among others.
  • Knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes suitable for space applications.
  • Familiarity with qualification and acceptance test standards, such as GEVS and related protocols.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a diverse, multidisciplinary team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication skills, enabling the effective transmission of technical information to various stakeholders.
