Atlas Roof Shingles & Underlayments is seeking a Research & Development (R&D) Lab Technician for the Hampton, GA facility.


The Research & Development Lab Technician performs laboratory specification testing, including inspection and testing of all finished production, experimental products, and raw materials to ensure it meets Atlas’ specifications. This position requires basic computer skills; attention to details; working knowledge of experimental design, and willingness to work at times in one of the manufacturing locations (travel), as needed. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.


Research & Development Lab Technician Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide inspection and testing of all finished products and raw materials to ensure they meet Atlas’ Specifications as required. Communicates any out of specification testing to Manager.
  • Performs line audits to assess finished quality and in process quality including temperatures, speed, pressures, etc.
  • Assists in the training of employees on specific test methods and equipment.
  • Input data in the computer as to specification requirements.
  • Input data into Microsoft products and Minitab daily and verifies data is accurate at the end of the month for QC monthly report.
  • Assist in the Competitive & Sister Audits, when time allows.
  • Communicate with Supervision and production employees as to quality issues during the production process.
  • Maintain lab equipment, scales and equipment on the manufacturing floor that are required for quality testing. Responsible for cleaning of testing materials, beakers, SP apparatus, etc. Keeping the lab in good working order and tidy.
  • Perform testing for all Products.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of new products.
  • Participate in project teams to improve quality, process, or performance on roofing products.
  • Travel to other production locations, industry meetings, and vendors as required.
  • Adhere to all Safety guidelines and wear proper PPE.
  • Perform other tasks as requested.

Research & Development Lab Technician Skills & Abilities

Microsoft programs, Minitab and other programs exclusive to R&D and Quality Assurance.

  • Mathematical skills with an emphasis on statistical processes.
  • Communication skills to effectively converse with Production.
  • Knowledge of the R&D laboratory processes and familiar with Manufacturing process.


Research & Development Lab Technician Education AND/OR Experience

  • High School education or equivalent.
  • Some college or an associate's degree preferred.
  • Min 5 years' experience in a laboratory setting.
