Primary Montessori Guide
Job Description:
1. Responsible for fostering growth towards independence and social responsibility in students and ensuring the safety and well-being of children at all times. This includes:
- a. Creating and maintaining a safe, clean, stimulating classroom where all children feel safe and valued;
- b. Establishing rapport and building relationships with students based on trust;
- c. Setting an excellent example for students; and
- d. Instilling good values in them like honesty, accountability, understanding, tolerance, respect, love, and kindness.
2. Give engaging presentations with Montessori materials in accordance with Association Montessori International (AMI) training that the children will use on their own. This is to include:
- a. Spoken and written language in the areas of daily life, storytelling, composition, literature, geography, history, biology, science, music, art, as well as the functional aspects of grammar, syntax, and reading analysis; and
- b. Sensorial foundations for counting, arithmetic, geometry, algebra, and fractions of whole numbers, as well as for biological and physical science experiences appropriate for young children.
3. Prepare the Montessori classroom environment including materials, furniture, equipment, and decoration to meet the needs of the young children's mental and physical development. This includes:
- s. Purchase or order the above once per year in preparation for the coming school year in collaboration with other Guides;
- t. Reorganize the classroom regularly to address the needs of specific students in the classroom; u. Support the classroom with a variety of plants that reinforce the botany lessons;
- v. Organize the storage of extra materials within the classroom;
- w. Pack and inventory the classroom at the end of the school year and unpack again at the beginning of the school year; and
- x. Set the materials to match the curriculum in order from left to right.
4. Prepare Montessori materials as well as maintain an inventory of classroom materials, independently and in collaborative partnership with other staff.
5. Work with and teach children with varying abilities, and support children who need special help. This includes:
- a. Introduce necessary and appropriate interventions and accommodations for students with diagnosed needs;
- b. Show students how to use weighted skipping ropes, medicine balls and other physical movement break materials;
- c. Communicate with therapists and other intervention providers to support students; d. Communicate with parents to connect them to the interventions and accommodations happening in the classroom; and
- e. Document all of the above in collaboration with the Administration.
6. Establish classroom management utilizing positive coaching according to AMI requirements and Butler Montessori's values.
7. Coordinate classroom routine, delegate duties to support staff appropriately, and train them based on AMI Montessori philosophy as needed. This includes:
- m. Meet weekly with the Head of School and share updates with classroom staff;
- n. Plan the schedule of each day; recess, hikes, lessons, circle time, etc.;
- o. Plan the schedule for the year to include breaks and events; and
- p. Teach classroom staff how to interact with students, assist students with bathroom and snack needs, replenish classroom materials, talk to parents, and clean the classroom and materials.
8. Observe and keep records of children's progress. This is to include:
- a. Use Transparent Classroom to plan and document lessons, notes and repetition;
- b. Use Transparent Classroom to keep attendance records;
- c. Use personal recording methods to keep track of lessons daily and communicate with other classroom staff;
- m. Communicate children’s progress to the Head of School;
- n. Raise awareness of and give suggestions for students who are not progressing as expected; and
- o. Communicate children’s progress to parents.
9. Prepare documentation necessary to facilitate parent-teacher conferences and to meet the requirements of the school Administration. This includes:
- a. In the Fall and Spring, write parent-guide Conference reports;
- b. At the end of the school year, write the Final Report for each child;
- c. Ensure all of the above are filed in the administrative offices with the child’s record; and
- d. At the end of the school year, complete each student’s transcript for the year.
10. Plan and execute Parent Education meetings, such as Orientation for New Parents, Back to School Night, Parent Observations, etc. to present to parents around the Montessori pedagogy.
11. Communicate with parents (in person and electronically through email and app) to keep them updated on the child's daily activities, needs, etc., and classroom happenings.
12. Hold Parent-Teacher conferences based on Montessori pedagogy and the work of the children twice per year.
Job Requirements
Masters degree in Education plus one (1) year of experience in any teaching position with children newborn to 5 years in a certified child development center, American Montessori Institute (AMI) diploma (primary), and Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) certificate.
40 hours per week, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
