Assistant Director, Software Architecture and Artificial Intelligence

The Assistant Director serves as backup for the Director of Enterprise Software Engineering (ESE). It is responsible for assisting the Director with strategic and operational planning, implementation oversight, and leadership within the department.

The Assistant Director provides technical program and personnel management oversight to the Software Infrastructure and Artificial Intelligence development groups. Tasks include the primary interface between ESE and other technical support and consumer groups within IT and throughout campus. These include Infrastructure Services Engineering, Platform Data and Application Administration, and University Decision Support within the Division of IT and IT units within the colleges to support Identity Management, Software Development Lifecycle, and general IT architectural guidance.

The Assistant Director directs all activities within the team, including project and program oversight, managing resources across activities to balance capability against shifting demands, mentoring and coaching staff for optimal performance, and acting as hiring manager for new and backfill recruiting. The Assistant Director also works closely with the Director of Enterprise Software Engineering for all technical, resource, and budget planning for the year.

This position is considered an essential position and may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during a major catastrophic event, weather emergency, or other operational emergencies to help maintain continuity of University services

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience:

* Seven (7) years of professional experience supporting the operations, maintenance, and administration of information technology infrastructure.

* At least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in the leadership and administration of major technology/service units.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Excellent written and oral communication skills with the capability of adapting communication style to different audiences

* Proficiency in delivering effective presentations and training sessions to team members, stakeholders, or clients. This includes the ability to identify opportunities for knowledge-sharing, skill development, and conducting informative sessions that enhance the team’s performance and productivity.

* Effectively manages communications and relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

* Ability to work well with other Assistant Directors, Directors, Managers, and Campus IT Supervisors to identify and solve problems, make improvements, and address ongoing issues

* Ability to provide a team with effective direction and support the team in implementations using standards and techniques that will lead to a repeatable and reliable solution.

* Demonstrate the ability to define deadlines and manage and maintain the quality of the work in use.

* Knowledge of IT security principles and practices is necessary to protect the systems and data from threats.

* Strong organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks, allocate resources effectively, and meet deadlines while overseeing team projects.

* Data analysis skills to be able to analyze domain-specific reporting and have the ability to set a five-year vision for your team.

* Experience in setting performance expectations, conducting performance evaluations, and implementing strategies to enhance team productivity and quality of work.

* The capacity to comprehend and handle interpersonal dynamics, demonstrate empathy towards team members, and effectively handle conflicts or challenging circumstances.

* Experience in coaching and mentoring team members to enhance their performance, provide constructive feedback, and help them develop their skills.

* Skilled in the use of office productivity software such as Office 365 or Google Workspaces.

Preferences:

* Strong understanding of software development methodologies, programming languages, and current technology trends.

* Proven ability to lead and manage teams of software engineers to deliver web based, batch and other software solutions.

* Familiarity with JIRA or other agile management software.

* Familiar with common software engineering deployment environments including UNIX, Windows, and mainframe.
