Our client is seeking a Mechanical Rotating Engineer to work within their facilities located in Houston, TX, for a 1-year assignment.


The Mechanical Rotating Engineer will provide technical assurance, leadership, and support the EPC Contractor through the FEED, detailed design, construction and commissioning phases. Work activities include audit and assurance of EPC's design to Project contractual obligations and specifications through coordination with EPC counterparts and other disciplines. The industry specifications include API, ASME, ANSI, PIP and other process industry codes and standards. Will be responsible for complex rotating equipment packages associated with high drive powers, gas turbine driven, multiple train components and associated auxiliary support packages, string tests and issue resolving.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensure equipment is designed and constructed to be safe, to perform the requirements of the process and meet the Project specifications.
  • Audit EPC detailed designs for rotating equipment; gas turbines, refrigerant and process compressors, drivers, gearboxes, blowers and pumps and their associated auxiliary support systems
  • Review equipment inquiry/purchase requisitions & technical bid evaluations supplied by EPC for correctness of selection.
  • Participate in factory acceptance tests and inspections.
  • Review vendor drawings and data, test procedures, reports and calculations in an audit and assurance role.
  • Attend Kick-off, Detailed Design, Model Reviews, Pre-Inspection Meetings
  • Participate in Process HAZID and HAZOP analysis as needed.
  • Interface with EPC counterparts and other EPC disciplines as part of project task forces
  • Track project deliverables with little or no supervision.
  • Stay abreast of current mechanical engineering developments thru participation in Industry technical shows and committees.
  • Train other engineers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Required Skills:

  • Familiarity and ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical diagrams, including flow charts, cause/effect diagrams, and Piping and Instrument Drawings (P&IDs).
  • Must have a good working knowledge of API, ASME, ANSI, PIP and other process industry codes and standards.
  • Ability to maintain multiple assignments with various deadlines and responsibility levels concurrently.
  • Ability to deal with a wide variety of people with tact, courtesy and professionalism.
  • This position will have extensive EPC and vendor interface, so communication skills must be excellent.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional and effective manner, including in-person, telephone, and E-mail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in referencing, researching, reporting, tracking and monitoring of activities and documents.
  • Ability to work independently and function with limited supervision.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point).
  • Specific knowledge in understanding the vibration as related to rotating equipment, this includes both analytical applications (lateral/torsional analysis) and diagnostics during Factory Acceptance Testing and commissioning activities.
  • Understanding of acoustic pulsation studies and pulsation issues on reciprocating equipment
  • Design and construction knowledge of NEC codes, especially as related to hazardous area applications.
  • Knowledge of mechanical equipment air emission reduction concepts and applications.


Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering. Mechanical engineering is preferred.
  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering preferred.
  • 10+ years of industry related experience with large rotating machinery. This experience should include gas turbines, large process or refrigerant compressors, drivers, gearboxes, blowers and pumps and their associated auxiliary support systems and/or skid mounted packaged systems.
  • Experience and knowledge of control systems for typical compression equipment.


Travel 25% on average required but may be more during equipment fabrication and less at other times consistent with typical project schedules, with extended periods spent in certain locations depending on work demands.
