Job Description:
Purpose:
To provide intensive nursing care to critically ill and unstable patients; such care includes ongoing monitoring of vital functions, assessing significant changes and initiating appropriate interventions.
In addition to Staff Nurse’s responsibilities, under the general direction of Director assigns, plans, directs, implements and evaluates nursing care for specific unit on an ongoing basis; demonstrates leadership that is self-directing, creative and innovative with an ability to function effectively in stressful situations; is tactful, relates effectively to and works with and through individuals with diverse backgrounds.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assesses and monitors patients conditions and initiates appropriate intervention including direct patient care.
- Performs the duties described in the generic Head Nurse’s job description.
- Initiates and maintains a system of communication with staff on a 24-hour basis interprets, implements and reinforces hospital and nursing policies; acts to resolve problems and grievances; makes referral to Service Director if necessary.
- Assists in planning, directing, providing and evaluating patient teachings.
- Assures proper utilization of supplies and equipment; orders supply as needed.
- Participates and encourages staff participation in the review of current data relative to clinical practice.
- Coordinates staff time planning with Staffing Director.
- Serves as a resource person to unit staff and assumes responsibility for the management of several units as designated on weekends/holidays & off tours.
- Participates in the accreditation process and PI activities.
- Attends/participates in continuing education programs.
Minimum Qualifications:
For individuals holding an unrestricted registered professional nursing license BEFORE July 1,
2020 in New York State, another state or United States territory:
- A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
- Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
- One (1) year of experience as a registered nurse.
For individuals issued a registered professional nursing license on or AFTER July 1, 2020,
based on expected implementation of Chapter 502 of the Laws of 2017 and Chapter 380 of the
Laws of 2018:
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional
Nurse in New York State; and
a. A Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing or higher (or other nursing degree, as identified by NYS Education Department including Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Science) from an accredited college or university, registered with the NYSED; or
b. Obtains a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing or higher, as described in “a” above, within ten (10) years of the date of initial licensure; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life
Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. One (1) year of experience as a registered nurse.
