Moravian Academy seeks a passionate and dynamic librarian to join our team in promoting a lifelong love of reading and fostering 21st-century information literacy skills on the Historic Downtown Campus to both our English and Spanish speaking students. As a key member of our educational community, the librarian will teach weekly classes to students preschool through fifth grade and collaborate closely with faculty to support students in inquiry-based learning and research projects. The successful candidate will curate and expand our collection of books in both English and Spanish, with a focus on inclusivity and diversity, while also engaging students and faculty in creative activities to promote daily reading habits. The Position

This is a full-time position consisting of oversight of the campus’ libraries and library classes taught on the Historic Downtown Campus during normal school hours between 7:45 a.m. and  3:30 p.m. during the school year. The successful candidate will report to the Director of the campus. 


Essential Functions

  • Library Management: Prepare and manage a library budget. Develop policies and procedures (a book selection policy, scope and sequence, etc). Maintain a circulation system that ensures the prompt return of materials and ready availability to other borrowers.
  • Collection Development: Develop, acquire and maintain a collection of resources appropriate to the curriculum, the students, the faculty and the school's mission. Maintain an attractive, current, diverse collection of resources including print and digital.
  • Instruction and Curriculum Development: Design and deliver curriculum and instruction in literary appreciation, research, digital literacy, and presentation skills tailored to each grade level.
  • Digital Citizenship and Technology Integration: Integrate digital citizenship skills and technology tools into library instruction.
  • Information LIteracy: Provide instruction to students on how to locate, evaluate, and use information effectively and ethically.
  • Budget Management: Manage the budget for all library-related expenditures, including physical and digital resources.
  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Demonstrate a commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive library environment and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of library programming and services.
  • Student-Centered Approach: Demonstrate an understanding of children's developmental stages and employ targeted strategies to meet their social, emotional, and academic needs.
  • Community Engagement: Foster meaningful partnerships with parents and families through regular communication via school-supplied online tools, emails, and phone calls.
  • Assessment and Reporting: Regularly assess student achievement and progress, providing narrative reports every trimester.
  • Collaboration: Participate in professional collaborations, including committee meetings, divisional efforts, and grade-team meetings. Collaborate with classroom teachers on specific needs within the curriculum. Lead the Library Guild of parent volunteers. Organize and participate in events such as author visits and book fairs. Maintain regular contact with the MSC and Swain Campus librarians, and actively participate in professional growth opportunities.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Possess strong interpersonal skills and effectively engage with colleagues, parents, and students of all ages.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science, Information Studies, or a related field from an ALA-accredited institution preferred
  • Strong technology skills
  • Prior elementary/middle school library experience is preferable.
  • Preferred candidates will have two years of library experience in a school setting
  • Excellence in classroom management techniques
  • Competence in connecting with students and creating a healthy classroom community
  • Competence in connecting with parents
  • Organized and purposeful about materials and lesson plans  
  • Collaboration with faculty and administration
  • Spanish Speaking candidates are preferred
