Greenhouse Technician

Location: Onsite in Memphis TN

Length: 2 year contract to perm

Work Environment:

-Greenhouse and Headhouse

Must Haves:

-Be able to stand for long periods of time/ be on their feet sampling, and in the greenhouse

-Willingness to learn

-Willingness to be in hot environments for long periods of time (some of the greenhouses can be very hot/ fluctuating temperatures)

Plusses:

-Degree in Biology

-Background in manufacturing/ warehouse, greenhouse environment, or landscaping

Day- to-Day:

The candidate would be working in both a greenhouse and headhouse environment and would need to be able to stand for long periods of time. They will be supporting the trait introgression and initiatives and will be working in both teams and independently. They will be working cross functionally with 9 team members. Some things the candidate will be doing consist of sampling genetically engineered plant tissue for DNA and protein testing in search of desired traits, planting engineered cotton seeds and maintaining suitable conditions for proper growth, preparing buffer solution to extract protein from cotton leaf, and assisting in plant selection, transplanting, plant placement, and plant care. Some of the activities in the greenhouse will include water monitoring, cleaning, hanging harvest bags and harvesting, fertilizing, pruning, crossing, re-clipping and stringing plants, cleaning and trashing. On a day-to-day basis, this greenhouse technician will be spending 100% on their time sampling Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Thursday and Friday the candidate will be moving around a lot. 50% of their day Thursday and Friday will be spent planting and repotting, and the other half will consist of various activities including trashing and cleaning. The candidate should be able to stand for long periods of time, endure hot temperatures in the greenhouse, communicate well with others, and have a good attention to detail.
