Coastal Numerical Modeler

CPE is a multidisciplined coastal consulting firm with a national presence and a flourishing coastal and marine engineering practice. We are pleased to announce an immediate opening for a Coastal Numerical Modeler to join our growing team in our Boca Raton office, located in the City of Boca Raton, FL. The position is for an individual with experience with conducting numerical modeling studies of coastal processes utilizing the Delft3D and/or XBeach model to work with our team of experienced coastal engineers and scientists in a dynamic startup environment.


Duties Responsibilities


  • Perform numerical modeling in support of coastal engineering projects such as beach dune and marsh restoration, coastal structures, inlet management, coastal resiliency and coastal flooding.
  • Coordinate and establish effective working relationships with team members, project managers, and clients.
  • Conduct numerical modeling studies from start to finish including pre-processing data, creating modeling grids, developing and implement boundary conditions, conducting numerical model calibration, project scenario simulations, results post processing, creation of modeling graphics and videos and preparation of final deliverables including numerical modeling report and power point presentations.
  • Participate in project decisions regarding numerical modeling scope and scheduling performance.
  • Prepare written and graphic reports and make project presentations.
  • Prepare various project documents under including reports, technical memorandums and technical papers to be published in specialized journals.


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in Coastal Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Oceanography or related fields.
  • Strong background in coastal processes.
  • Experience with numerical modeling of coastal and estuarine systems including coastal hydrodynamics, sediment transport and morphology change utilizing Delft3D and/or XBeach modelling suites.
  • Experience with Matlab programming, specifically development of pre- and post-processing scripts for Delft3D applications.
  • Experience with meteocean data analysis.
  • Proficient English communication skills (oral and written).
  • Experience with GIS software such as ArcMap, Global Mapper, or similar.


Additional Desired Qualifications:


The following additional qualifications are not mandatory but will be viewed favorably:

  • Experience with other coastal numerical model software such as the CMS (USACE), Gencade, C-Shore, ShorelineS, Bouss2D, CGWAVE, Beach-Fx, Fun Wave, Mike21, Litpack, ADCIRC, SLOSH, HEC-2, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, SWMM/XPSWMM.
  • Experience with other programming languages such as Python and C++.
  • PE License, or ability to obtain a PE
  • Experience with AutoCAD.
  • Experience modeling hydrological processes and compound coastal flooding.
  • Experience with operational forecasts and real time data assimilation by models.
  • Experience with metocean data collection in the field.
  • Experience preparing project scope and fee proposals.
  • Publications Coastal Engineering Journals and Presentation in National and International Coastal Conferences.
