Ghirardelli Associates is currently looking to hire a Resident Engineer. This position will be based out of our Irvine Office. This is an opportunity to work with an experienced team of professionals


POSITION SUMMARY:


The Structures Inspector will be responsible for inspecting, documenting, and coordinating field testing of materials for all structure work on a project. The structures inspector will oversee the contractor’s construction methods and workmanship to ensure structures such as bridges, retaining walls, overhead signs, and other related structures are built in accordance with plans and specifications. The structures inspector may serve as the only inspector on a construction project, assist in overseeing structures inspection activities for very large or complex projects within a district, or conduct statewide structures inspection activities for ongoing projects.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Ensures all structures-related activities are compliant with the project, state, and federal safety requirements.
  • Coordinates communication between district/division/Department of Public Safety and other external entities.
  • Must be familiar with construction inspection techniques associated with the construction of bridges, roadways, highways, light rail, heavy rail, airports, utilities, marine facilities, ports, and other infrastructure facilities, as required by the current assignment.
  • Ensures contractors build bridges and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Ensures temporary structures such as falsework, and their submittals, are reviewed, authorized, verified, certified, and inspected for compliance with the contract, shop drawings, and licensed engineer’s design.
  • Attends pre-construction meetings.
  • Prepares a written daily report documenting construction activities, including but not limited to contractor’s labor, equipment, daily construction progress, project site visitors, non-conforming work, safety issues, traffic control measures, field measured quantiles, field discussions with the contractor and public, daily project photos, change order work performed, and weather conditions.
  • Prepares a daily timesheet which records all hours worked, along with vacation, holidays, and sick leave taken.
  • Consults with Structures Representative, Resident Engineer, Construction Inspector, Project Engineer, other project representatives, and contractor personnel regarding work progress and construction issues.
  • Prepares quantity calculation sheets to support monthly progress payments made to the contractor.
  • Provides support for structures-related change orders which may include drafting of change orders and providing cost estimates.
  • Coordinates field testing of construction materials.
  • Checks and verifies elevations of structural elements such as piles and retaining walls.
  • Monitors project phasing and traffic control plans for compliance with approved Traffic Management Plan.
  • As needed, trains and mentors less experienced inspectors on work methods.
  • Must be familiar with regulatory requirements such as CalOsha, US Department of Fish and Wildlife, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Army Corp of Engineers, Regional Water Quality Control Boards (includes Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP)), and other regulatory agencies as required.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2 - 4 years as Structures Inspector required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Basic computer skills required (Microsoft Word, Excel).
  • Caltrans experience, highly desired.
  • Knowledge of Caltrans and Local Agency Standard Plans and Specifications and Greenbook.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to withstand the following for up to 8-12 hours per day in all weather conditions (sun, rain, sleet, and snow): Ability to work any day of the week both night and day; must have physical agility to perform tasks requiring a full range of body movements including lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, stretching, twisting, reaching, balancing, squatting, climbing, crawling, kneeling, or assuming crouched positions and may involve repetitive arm, hand, finger, wrist, leg or foot motion. The employee is frequently required to walk on uneven terrain, bend, duck, look up, climb ladders or stairs, all while wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The employee must frequently use safety equipment such as a hard hat and safety vest; work in areas not well ventilated such as utility vaults; work outdoors or on uneven ground or floor spaces; work at elevations above ground level. The employee must be able to work in all weather conditions and can be called upon to work any day of the week both night and day. The employee must be available for after hour emergency response.
