Full Time: 37.5 hours per week | Hourly
On Call 24/7
Reports to Deputy Director
The Everson Museum of Art seeks a skilled, enthusiastic multi-skilled leader to join its high-energy team as Facilities Manager. The Facilities Manager oversees daily operations, facilities management, and security of the Museum’s iconic I.M. Pei-designed building in downtown Syracuse. Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Facilities Manager leads a small team of security guards and gallery attendants, and manages the coordination of building operations, maintenance, and repair. As the designated on-call contact for off-hours alarms and emergencies, flexibility in working shifts, including weekends, is essential.
Responsibilities to include (but not limited to):
Physical operations of facility
· Maintain and monitor all facility systems and equipment, responding to and resolving problems when necessary.
· Work with outside vendors to maintain HVAC controls, plumbing, and electrical systems.
· Plan and execute seasonal maintenance program for both the Museum’s interior and exterior.
· Develop goals for planning and prioritizing large-scale maintenance and repair efforts.
· Manage departmental budget, keeping records of expenditures, repairs, and maintenance.
· Perform day-to-day repairs as needed in all areas of the Museum.
Security and safety
· Coordinate necessary inspections, testing, and monitoring of electronic security systems.
· Coordinate safety training for all staff to include fire safety, fire extinguisher, and evacuation procedures.
· Maintain existing and where feasible, install/update equipment to protect Museum contents.
· Supervise security personnel and the physical activity within the building during public, special events, and closed hours of operation.
· Ensure building is in code compliance and obtain necessary permits for projects and special events as required.
Fabrication and installation
· Work with curatorial and other departments as required for temporary and permanent installations. This may include building walls or pedestals, painting, or artwork transportation.
· Order materials and maintain tools and equipment.
· Coordinate outside vendors for additional painting, carpentry, and/or electrical as needed.
Management of departmental staff
· Provide leadership for security, gallery attendant, and janitorial staff, including hiring, training, and evaluation.
· Establish daily, short-term, and long-term priorities to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the building at all times.
· Meet regularly with departmental staff to communicate items and areas to be addressed.
· Coordinate with part-time staff to address and complete weekend tasks as required.
IT & A/V
· Maintain and troubleshoot IT issues, coordinating with outside vendors as needed.
· Operate auditorium A/V and provide training to staff and outside groups utilizing that space.
Construction management
· Represent the Museum in a professional manner at all times when working with vendors.
· Plan, survey, schedule, and implement Museum construction and renovation projects.
· Work with architects and engineers to develop plans and specifications.
· Monitor and inspect work in progress.
· Serve as the point person for all contractors and vendors related to construction projects.
· Troubleshoot field conditions and advise/implement corrective action.
· Document and record construction details to enable future reference.
· Ensure work environment is safe and compliant with current codes and standards.
· Provide technical and financial information to development office as needed to facilitate grant funding for future construction and renovation.
· Report progress and updates to the Facilities Committee of the Board of Trustees.
The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills with acute problem-solving ability, attention to detail, ability to recognize and address day-to-day and long-term responsibilities without direct supervision, and be supportive of colleagues in all areas of museum operations.
Necessary Skills
• A minimum of three years’ experience in facilities/operations management.
• A minimum of one year of supervisory experience.
• A working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, security systems, general carpentry, and hardware and software that the Museum employs.
• Comfortable and proficient with a wide range of technology, including office support software and physical security systems. Knowledge of wireless and IP-based camera systems, data storage, access control, and other emergent security technology.
• Familiarity with Audio/Visual controls and equipment.
· Enthusiastic to learn new technology.
· Possess excellent oral and written communication skills, with an aptitude for summarizing large amounts of information.
Physical requirements
· Ability to operate power tools and machinery, ascend/descend ladders and stairs, position self to maintain equipment, machinery, work at heights, or in confined spaces.
· Ability to observe fine detail when operating machinery, identifying any potential hazards.
· Operate a computer and Microsoft office platform and other basic office equipment
· Lift up to 50 pounds while at work.
