Duties and Responsibilities

Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures. Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and component, using test equipment to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem. Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components. Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes. Advise Physical Plant Director on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous. Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of system. Keeps electrical shop in neat and clean condition. Cares for all tools needed in electrical work. Supervises and train student workers. Does some welding or mechanical jobs as needed. Repairs, removes, and replaces, concrete, masonry, sidewalks, driveways, curbs, and gutters, etc. Operates small equipment, jackhammer, cement mixer, forklift, cherry picker, and backhoe. Assists plumber as needed Clean roofs, and roof drains Must be able to drive a university vehicle to job sites. Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance relating to electrical duties. Working knowledge of the following: nail gun; hydraulic jack; hand tools (proper use); circular saw; chain saw; pipe threader; hoist; table saw; chop saw; band saw; jig saw; recipricating saw; gas and electric welder; joiner; door jig; framing square; tape measure; etc. Knowledge of modern office equipment including telephone communications, office systems and record keeping. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions and to deal with problems as they arise. Ability to perform basic math skills, use decimals to compute ratios and percents, and to draw and interpret graphs. Ability to use passive vocabulary of 5-6000 words; to read at a slow rate; define unfamiliar words in dictionaries for meaning, spelling and pronunciation. Ability to write complex sentences, using proper punctuation, adjectives and adverbs. Ability to communicate in complex sentences; using normal word order with present and past tenses; and using a good vocabulary. Finger dexterity-using primarily just the fingers to make small movements such as typing, picking up objects or pinching fingers together. Ability to talk, especially where one must frequently convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately. Average hearing, able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information. Average visual ability- average, ordinary visual acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products, or operate machinery. Must be in good physical condition and able to lift and carry objects/equipment, etc. up to 50 pounds. Able to ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion. Able to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium. Able to bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist (stooping). Able to bend legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees (kneeling). Able to bend the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine (crouching). Able to move about on hands and knees or hands and feet (crawling). Able to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction. Able to remain upright on the feet, particularly for sustained periods of time. Able to move about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another. Able to use upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward. Credentials and Experience

Special Requirements

Some after hour work required as needed or during emergencies, and Heavy work, must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and Able to be exposed to indoor and outdoor elements, and chemical, electrical, mechanical, explosive, radiant hazards.

Wage Range: $18.72 to $21.50 per hour plus generous benefits listed below:
