Columbia University School of Professional Studies (SPS) invites applications for a full time position at the level of Associate Professor of Professional Practice or Professor of Professional Practice to teach in the school’s Master of Science degree program in Human Capital Management (HCM). This is a full-time faculty appointment with multi-year renewal contingent on successful review. The position will begin on July 1, 2024.

The successful candidate will teach multiple core courses related to two of the following Human Capital Management program’s curriculum themes:

People analytics, financial management, insights and strategic decision-making to develop and measure the effectiveness of human capital management programs.

Digital technologies (including artificial intelligence), that support the development of a strategic, interdisciplinary, and integrative approach to using technology to measure and manage human capital in the new world of work.

Leadership development, organization development and integrated talent management to assure a capable, engaged workforce.

Additional responsibilities will include coaching students regarding academics, opportunities and challenges in their current jobs and professional development opportunities; contributing to programmatic and curricular development efforts; conducting and publishing scholarly research; participating in admissions and strategic planning efforts for the program; contributing to marketing and communications; supporting student recruitment, student life, and alumni affairs; and serving on HCM program and Columbia University School of Professional Studies committees.

In addition to the above responsibilities, the successful candidate may at some point have the opportunity to serve as the program’s director to lead programmatic efforts and strategic planning. Program director responsibilities include:

Supporting the development and sustainability of a positive, engaging, growth-minded program culture.

Developing admissions criteria and leading the admissions review process.

Mentoring students and facilitating professional development opportunities for them.

Curriculum design, budgeting, and planning.

Recruiting, assessing, developing and coaching faculty and staff.

Supporting student life and alumni affairs.

Networking across Columbia University and externally.

Contributing to the overall success of the School of Professional Studies.

The program at Columbia University prepares graduates to develop innovative, business-driving strategies that address human capital challenges through data-driven, market-based insights and organization-wide integrated solutions.

We are seeking candidates with a graduate degree in industrial/organizational psychology; leadership; human resource development; learning and development; data science, or another academic discipline that is related to Human Capital Management. Ideal candidates will hold a doctoral degree or terminal degree. All applicants must have a BA/BS. Candidates should have a background as a practitioner and a scholar, including at least fifteen years of applied experience working as an organizational leader, with accountability for delivering enterprise-wide Human Capital Management strategies. International experience is desirable. 

Candidates at the rank of Professor of Professional Practice are expected to have substantial experience and accomplishments, a superlative record of teaching, documented evidence of excellent scholarship or exemplary success in having served as Chief Human Resources Officer of an organization, and evidence of professional growth and activity in the Human Capital Management field.

Candidates at the rank of Associate Professor of Professional Practice are expected to have teaching experience, documented evidence of excellence in their field, having served in a senior Human Resources position and evidence of professional growth and activity in the Human Capital Management field.
