Summary
Penn Charter seeks a full-time Lower School Math Coordinator to begin in August 2024. This is a 10-month position. The primary responsibilities are to provide math support, enrichment, and to coordinate the math curriculum in grades Pre-K-5. Candidates must also have at least five years of experience teaching Lower School children and a passion for teaching math to elementary children. The Math Coordinator will partner with the Division Director and colleagues to provide an engaging math program and find creative approaches to enhance our curriculum.

The Math Coordinator is a part of the Lower School Leadership team and will support the division. Prior experience with Concrete, Pictorial, and Abstract (CPA) approaches is strongly preferred. Familiarity with the principles and practices of Quakerism and Quaker education, Responsive Classroom, and Project Based Learning are highly desirable.


The successful candidate will embrace student-centered pedagogy, model curiosity, and ongoing professional growth. Additionally, they will demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in their teaching practice and when building relationships and have the ability to support educators in using a variety of math resources, including manipulatives and technology, to advance learning that meets the diverse learning, cultural, and social-emotional needs of individual students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


Curriculum

Coordinate the math curriculum in grades pre-K through fifth, including the maintenance of curriculum maps Partner with teachers to establish sequential goals and objectives of math skills and standards in grades pre-K through fifth Actively plan with teachers for the integration of math skills as part of or within Project Based

Learning units

Manage math assessment tools and the timeline for their administration Visit grade-level classrooms weekly to observe and support student needs Maintain a data collection system to inform instructional decisions and track progress


Student Support

Provide individual and small group work in math instruction Communicate and follow through with parents regarding student support plans, interventions, and recommend tutors Attend meetings in support of students Maintain a list of approved math tutors for parents/caregivers Serve as the point person communicating with outside tutors.

Coaching

Support teachers in developing and implementing strategies to meet the diverse needs of students, including those requiring additional support or enrichment Manage and organize math-related resources, including textbooks, digital tools, manipulatives, and other online materials In partnership with the literacy coordinator, develop a coaching model for observations and feedback Provide and promote math-related professional development for colleagues Lead parent/caregiver education workshops Serve as a liaison between outside educational consultants and school personnel Lower School Leadership Team
Attend leadership, child study, and wellness team meetings Lead parent/caregiver workshops Attend divisional events Proofreader of report cards Attend monthly Department Chair Group meetings

Other

Perform other duties as assigned by the Lower School Director or their designee (some include lunch, recess, and drop off or dismissal duties) Participating in a co-curricular activity such as coaching, clubs, assisting with theatrical performance, community service, or enrichment activity. Maintaining a growth mindset and actively participating in faculty professional development and supervision, including observations and feedback conversations with support from the assistant head, division director, and department chair.

Stay current on technological tools and platforms to support instruction through ongoing research, attending conferences, and engaging in school visits Ability to differentiate instruction A deep understanding of child development Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and social justice in their approach to the work and building relationships with students and other community members Excellent verbal and written communication skills A comprehensive understanding of the field of education and a demonstrated willingness to explore and embrace new pedagogical practices, technologies, and developing trends Provide interactive and meaningful learning opportunities to encourage the active participation of all students while maintaining a positive and inclusive learning environment Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to quickly adapt to changing group dynamics Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with internal and external members of the Penn Charter community Ability to use various platforms and systems within Google Workspace Excellent sense of humor and love of working with children

Physical Demands:

Ability and willingness to work in unpredictable weather conditions Ability to lift at least 30 pounds Ability to walk, stand, or kneel for extended periods of time Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions

Required Qualifications:

A Master’s degree in Math or related field 5+ years of experience in elementary school education Knowledge of pertinent mathematical models and pedagogical practices Knowledge of educational platforms and software including but not limited to Google Workspace and Seesaw.
