The University of South Dakota Office of Human Subjects Protection is seeking an independent, driven person to fill the role of IRB Coordinator.
This position has two primary responsibilities. First, oversee the audit function of USD’s Human Research Protection Program and perform compliance audits of experiments involving humans. This involves leaving the office and meeting with researchers regularly, significant preparatory work, interviews with researchers, document review, and writing and presenting reports to the Director and Institutional Review Board. This position will also assist with non-compliance determinations, action plans, and monitoring. This position will also audit research projects that do not involve human subjects to ensure compliance with federal and institutional requirements.
The second primary responsibility is the review of human subject protocols, which includes applying federal regulations, VA policy, and USD policy and procedures to evaluate proposed human subject research protocol, assisting researchers with changes, and approving the research project. This can be a lengthy, tedious process and involves careful reading, interpretation and application of federal law and institutional policy, and being as helpful as possible to researchers. This position will also serve as the Director’s authorized delegate when the Director is unavailable.

Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degreeAt least 2 years of experience related to compliance work and/or higher educationAbility to understand, interpret, and apply federal regulationsAbility to organize, write about and discuss regulatory and complex issues clearlyDemonstrate good written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate with people from various disciplines and backgrounds Preferred Qualifications:Advanced degree in a relevant fieldConceptual familiarity with human subjects and other academic research, experience working in a fast-paced academic research environment, and experience working with faculty from various academic disciplinesAbility to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work well under deadlinesProven ability to take initiativeExperience working independently and as a team member
