Job Description

Under general direction, the Heavy Equipment Operator II operates and maintains solid waste collection heavy equipment to include roll-off trucks, brush open top trucks, container retriever trucks, water trucks, and dump trucks. Employee has no supervisory responsibilities of personnel. Employee must abide by all safety rules and operational policies and procedures.

Job Responsibilities

1. Position requires driving and operating heavy equipment used in solid waste collection as assigned.
2. Performs and completes assigned solid waste collection route(s).
3. Inspects vehicle and equipment daily for proper mechanical functioning and performs minor and preventive
maintenance on the equipment.
4. Transports collected garbage, recyclables, brush and other materials to appropriate disposal sites.
5. Maintains a record of the equipment and route operations.
6. Required to follow all safety rules and regulations.
7. Performs other job related duties as assigned or necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum Requirements - 1. An accredited high school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
2. Job requires at least one (1) year of related work experience.
3. Job requires a valid Texas Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class B with Air Brakes.
4. Must have a general knowledge of subject area to perform effectively, with little direct supervision – various work situations having deviations and irregularities.
5. Must possess the skill to operate light and heavy equipment and vehicles.
6. Must have ability to work with others.
7. Must be able to operate equipment safely and efficiently.
8. Must have ability to communicate (read/write) in English; bilingual skills in English and Spanish preferred.

Physical Requirements

1. Must be able to work in extreme heat and cold weather environments.
2. Work involves operating a piece of equipment, normally from a sitting position, as well as frequent physical labor.
3. Works outdoors and works some unusual hours, irregular hours or shifts, with hazards which may result in lost time.

Additional Information

1. This is a safety sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
2. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
3. Job requires working evenings, weekends, holidays and during hurricane or other emergencies, when needed.
4. Required to be on stand-by (on call waiting to be engaged to work) when necessary.
