Overview
The Respiratory Care Coordinator is a Registered Respiratory Therapist that coordinates and oversees inter/intra-disciplinary education and onboarding of respiratory therapists. He/she is the primary liaison to area academic respiratory therapy programs; as such, is responsible for coordinating and overseeing clinical rotations and actively participating with area Clinical Advisory Boards. Additionally, the Respiratory Care Coordinator supports departmental goals and accepts other duties as assigned.
The incumbent conducts himself/herself in a professional manner and is courteous to patients, physicians, visitors, members of the department and all other healthcare personnel. The incumbent supports and contributes to departmental productivity and organizational objectives by functioning as a member of the respiratory care team and performs services consistent with his/her scope of licensure. The incumbent supports and exhibits behaviors consistent with the organization’s mission and values in offering hope and healing to all.
This position requires varied hours for educational purposes and serves the UofL Health System including but not limited to Jewish Hospital, UofL Hospitals, and Medical Centers as needed.
Responsibilities
1. Coordinate and assist in onboarding/orienting employees.
2. Develop, coordinate and present/monitor intradisciplinary education (e.g., competency assessments, continued education, etc.) activities to support respiratory therapists’ knowledge and skills.
3. Develop/assist in developing, coordinate and present interdisciplinary education activities related to respiratory and pulmonary care.
4. Maintain understanding of current and evolving best practices, industry trends and technologic advancements that impact care administered by respiratory therapists.
5. Thoroughly understand clinical policies/protocols and recommend appropriate modifications.
6. Provide, or arrange for the provision of respiratory therapy education to patients and/or visitors.
7. Monitor respiratory therapists’ relevant expiration dates (e.g., state license, AHA certificates, etc.) and aid in facilitating renewal when needed.
8. Facilitate mechanism for information cascade to respiratory therapists related to policy updates, best practice and other relevant information.
9. Serve as a consultant/resource for members of the interdisciplinary care team (e.g., respiratory therapists, nurses, physicians, physician extenders, clinical pharmacists, etc.)
10. Provide clinical respiratory therapy services when needed.
11. Aid in facilitating active participation by respiratory therapists’ in interdisciplinary rounds.
12. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):
At a minimum, the incumbent shall have received the equivalent of an Associate’s Degree in Cardiopulmonary Sciences or Respiratory Care from an accredited respiratory therapy educational program. A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.
Note: Educational programs that are eligible for accreditation but have not yet achieved accreditation status meet the educational program standard. Also, educational programs that were accredited or eligible for accreditation at the time the incumbent graduated from the program meet the educational program standard.
The incumbent shall be distinguished as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC); such distinction shall be kept current (if applicable). Additionally, the incumbent shall hold an active license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner from the Kentucky Board of Respiratory Care.
The incumbent shall hold current certificates from the American Heart Association (AHA) in Basic Life Support (or Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
Experience (required and preferred):
The incumbent shall have a minimum of three years of respiratory therapy experience in the critical care setting in an acute care or academic medical facility.
