Aphasia Program Summary: The Craig Hospital Aphasia Therapy (CHAT) program offers specialized, intensive outpatient therapy for individuals with aphasia as a result of traumatic or other acquired brain injury. Through in-person or telehealth options, this evidence-based, patient-centered program utilizes on-to-one and group therapy, family training, neurologic music therapy, augmentative and alternative communication, and yoga to improve the quality of life of persons living with this communication disorder. Our mission is to provide intensive, comprehensive, goal-oriented programs to maximize the level of independence, quality of life and self-efficacy of persons with aphasia.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Licensure/Certification/Registrations:  Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Speech/Language Pathology from the American Speech/Language Hearing Association.BLS for the Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association required. 

Education:  Master’s Degree in Speech/Language Pathology

Experience:  Hospital setting preferred.

Skills & Abilities: Operates the following equipment:

Audiometer

Tape recorder

Computer

Telephone

Video equipment

Suction machine.

Performs basic wheelchair handling skills.

Copy machine

Abilities:

Determining time, place, and sequence of operations or action to be taken on the basis of analysis of data; executing determinations and/or reporting on events.

Dealing with individuals in terms of their total personality in order to advise, counsel, and/or guide them with regard to problems that may be resolved by clinical or other professional principles.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Selects, administers, scores and interprets diagnostic tests to evaluate speech/language/cognitive skills.

Sets short term and long term treatment goals.

Designs and implements individualized treatment plan, including number of treatments and length of time needed to achieve goals.

Communicates with treatment team regarding evaluation results, treatment program, and goals.

Participates with treatment team in discharge planning.

Conducts group treatment sessions.

Completes required medical records documentation.

Educates family and patient regarding evaluation results, treatment program and goals.

Provides services to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients and adapts the plan of care as needed.

Follows hospital infection control policies, including body substance isolation and proper hand hygiene before and after contact with patients, handling of food, and after hands are contaminated with any body fluids, secretions or excretions.

Understands his/her responsibility to inform patients, family and visitors of the importance of hand hygiene in all environments.
