Position Summary

The Math and Science Learning Center Assistant Academic Advisor (Student Services Professional IA) reports directly to the Dean of the College of Sciences with supervision from the College of Sciences (CoS) Director of Advising and the Math and Science Learning Center Principal Lead. The MSLC provides a vital service to a community of students who need support in coursework. The MSLC Assistant Academic Advisor will work as a member of the MSLC team and is responsible for working with the MSLC Principal Lead on all aspects of matters requiring coordinating the academic needs for tutoring support, supporting existing courses and programs, and assessing future needs. The MSLC Principal Lead will work on training the MSLC Assistant Academic Advisor to maintain effective, harmonious working relationships with MSLC staff and tutors, faculty, departments, CoS SSC stakeholders, and other college stakeholders to ensure operating goals are met consistently.

The position is responsible for supporting the MSLC Principal Lead in assuring the continued functioning and success of the MSLC, and provides ongoing support for MSLC content liaisons, tutors, staff and assures University Policies are met in all areas of the student experience.

This is a part-time (.50 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position anticipated to end on December 31, 2024, with the possibility of reappointment. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Work hours are Monday – Friday, 12:00 . to 4:00 ., but may vary based on operational needs. 

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The College of Sciences (CoS) includes eight academic departments, an additional eight degree-issuing programs, eight joint doctoral programs, seventeen research centers and institutes, fifteen student support programs, numerous research groups, clinics and labs, as well as a number of off-campus instructional and research centers, including the Mount Laguna Observatory, Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve, Sky Oaks Field Stations, Fortuna Mountain Research Reserve, Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve and the Coastal & Marine Institute. There are over 300 full- and part-time faculty and 100 clerical and technical Employees. There are a wide variety of interests in both teaching and research.

The Math and Science Learning Center (MSLC), located in Love Library 328, provides a physical hub and centralized location for free, on-demand tutoring for students enrolled in lower division mathematics, and statistics. In addition, the MSLC has expanded to offer tutoring support in selected courses for Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, upper division Math and more. The MSLC facilitates partnerships with faculty to utilize their teaching assistants (TAs) for course support. The MSLC is open to any student at SDSU needing support in math and science courses and typically supports 1,500 unique students per semester who return for continued support with a total of 7,000 visits per semester.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Key Qualifications

Educational Background in mathematics, sciences, education and/or teaching. Direct experience working in a tutoring center in a managing and/or leadership role is preferred. Experience managing a large number of students and/or staff is preferred. Experience working in a college or university’s tutoring or student support related office. Experience working with diverse student populations. Experience presenting to diverse audiences of varying size. Experience in writing reports. Experience updating websites.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $1,976 per month. 

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $1,976 - $2,417 per month.
