The Program Manager – Nursing Excellence and Clinical Outcomes is responsible for the direction, coordination, and evaluation of nursing quality indicators. The Manager leads and works collaboratively with leadership and nursing staff to drive key nursing professional development programs designed to elevate practice across UofL Health.

The Program Manager ensures that professional development programs are facilitated by appropriately prepared educational professionals using evidence based best practices, including technology, to meet the needs of nursing staff and interdisciplinary partners to accomplish organizational and nursing goals. The manager supports the core behaviors, standards, values, and missions of the organization, accrediting bodies, and profession of nursing as a professional role model.

Responsibilities

Leadership
• Serves as a culture and change strategist to advance the practice of professional nursing.
• Elevates nursing practice through facilitation and involvement in Nursing Congress and clinical advancement program.
• Coordinates and leads the organization’s nursing excellence processes and program (i.e. Magnet®)
• In collaboration with facility nursing leadership, develops strategies to implement the Chief Nursing Officer’s vision and plans for attaining or retaining nursing excellence designations.
• Ensures organizational initiatives and professional nursing concepts, including Magnet® standards, are integrated into orientation, shared governance, peer review, clinical advancement, Nurse Residency, preceptor and mentor, and other nursing programs
• Oversees the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) and compiles and disseminates nurse-sensitive outcomes throughout the facility.
• Fiscal responsibility for designated areas.

Clinical Expert
• Serves as a role model to nursing staff in the delivery of excellent patient care
• Collaborates with leadership to develop, evaluate, and implement standards of patient care / care planning and professional practice with attention to quality, service, cost effectiveness, comfort, safety, age specific implications, and cultural competence
• Serves as a patient / family advocate, incorporating respect for and acknowledgement of cultural diversity and individual patient needs
• Promotes an environment consistent with the core concepts of Patient Centered Care, and demonstration of the core values

Learning Facilitator
• Develops action plans, obtains resources, and completes evaluation metrics in a timely manner to ensure workplace learning and performance goals are achieved.
• Facilitates the ongoing education, competency and professional development of the staff to meet competency requirements in accordance with departmental objectives and appropriate accreditation standards
• Plans, prepares, and maintains materials for use in competency based educational programs, utilizing current standards, regulations, and evidenced based resources
• Maintains current evidence-based knowledge in nursing professional development
• Collaborates with stakeholders to assess learning needs for staff of all levels, designs and implements programs and competency strategies to address identified learning needs
• Incorporates principles of adult learning and evidence-based education in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education and competency programs
• Participates in learning technologies via simulation, LMS, virtual classroom, and multimedia
• Communicates effectively in visual, oral, and written form and demonstrates effective presentation skills

Development of Self and Others
• Maintains affiliation with professional organizations
• Obtains and maintains professional nursing certification in professional development and/or education
• Fosters attainment of professional development and certification for bedside nursing staff through mentoring, classes, programs, and study groups
• Selects, develops, evaluates and mentors staff in the areas of education and research
• Facilitates a high-quality work environment that is participatory, productive, safe and healthy
• Assures effective open communication both within the department and across the system
• Promotes and role models lifelong learning

Consultant / Interdisciplinary Collaborator / Facilitator
• Assist and support operational nursing leadership in creating and sustaining a culture of nursing excellence through action planning and quality improvement.
• Effectively manages assigned programs, projects and process implementations under purview
• Serves as an educational consultant and/or facilitator to outside institutions as well as hospital committees, task forces, and projects
• Maintains involvement in professional, community, and clinical specialty activities
• Serves as a consultant to clinical staff, physicians, administration, Nursing school programs, and the public for clinical education and the clinical nursing care of hospitalized patients

• Identifies and supports needed opportunities for change
• Develops programs that assist attendees to embrace change as a desired process to support best practice
• Challenges existing practice when not aligned with current best practices
• Demonstrates flexibility

Researcher
• Expands the scientific base of nursing practice by initiating and/or participating in continuous quality improvement and evidence-based practice activities and/or research studies
• Critically analyzes current nursing research methods and outcomes for inclusion in the curriculum content of education to support patient care
• Incorporates current research findings into educational activities
• Supports and demonstrates validated evidence-based practice
• Disseminates research findings though clinical presentations and publications

Qualifications

Education:
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited program (required)
• Master’s degree in nursing, leadership, or education (required)
• DNP, PhD or EdD (preferred)

Experience:
• Minimum of five (5) years as a Registered Nurse in area of clinical specialty (required)
• Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in education, teaching or professional development (required)

Licensure:
• Active Kentucky Registered Nurse License or compact license with privileges to work in Kentucky (required)

Certification:
• Professional nursing certification in professional development, leadership or education (required)
• American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider (required)
