Carnegie Mellon University’s department of Mechanical Engineering is searching for a Research Scientist to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to the department by conducting high-level research in the experimental and computational mechanics of soft materials, with a focus on solving real-world challenges and participating in designing and executing laboratory experiments and computational simulations to explore the mechanical properties and behaviors of soft materials and such other tasks that are assigned to you. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in a cutting-edge research environment, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to develop and apply innovative technologies that can impact industry, healthcare, and other applied fields.

Core Responsibilities:

Conduct high-level research in the experimental and computational mechanics of soft materials. Design and execute laboratory experiments and computational simulations to explore the mechanical properties and behaviors of soft materials. Collaborate with faculty, graduate students, and industry partners to translate research outcomes into practical applications, including potential commercialization efforts. Lead and contribute to research proposals, progress reports, and peer-reviewed publications. Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in research methodologies and experimental techniques. Engage in interdisciplinary research collaborations within the department and across Carnegie Mellon University, as well as with external partners. Identify and pursue opportunities for technology transfer, intellectual property development, and start-up ventures. Present research findings at conferences, workshops, and industry meetings.

Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field 5-8 years of experience preferred. Requirements: Experience in designing and leading research projects in an academic and/or applied research environment A strong background in experimental and computational mechanics of “soft” materials (polymers, foams, and biological materials), with a particular emphasis on translational research and the potential for commercialization A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
