Summary:The Pathology Assistant (PA) is responsible for (1) case accessioning (when needed); (2) gross description and sampling of low complexity tissue specimens; (3) act as diener during autopsies; (4) preparation and collection of tissue for special studies; (5) cutting, staining, and cover slipping of frozen section tissue; (6) maintaining supplies of gross room/morgue; (7) disposal of old specimens; (8) identify and resolve labeling/identification discrepancies. All of the above is done with a degree of supervision needed for each activity. The supervision level is determined by the Pathologists' Assistant Supervisor or the Pathologist in charge of the gross room.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's Degree (Required)HT - Histotechnician Registered - American Society for Clinical PathologyAmerican Society for Clinical Pathology

Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) from four-year college or university in Biology/Zoology or related health/science field, and one year experience grossing of small/medium complex specimens under the supervision of a certified Pathologist. 

OR

Successful completion of course requirements from accredited School of Histotechnology, HT (ASCP) certification and/or Associate degree in related health/science field, and one year acceptable experience grossing small specimens under the supervision of a certified Pathologist or appropriate coursework as defined by CLIA.

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE

Highly skilled communicator with pathologists and other physicians regarding specimen processing for frozen section, gross pathology, and/or autopsy pathology. 

Organizational, technical, and language skills to be able to accomplish responsibility in high pressure situations. 

Attention to detail in order to be able to recognize important and sometimes subtle gross abnormalities with knowledge of how to submit these in sections to arrive at proper diagnosis.

In depth knowledge of gross anatomy with basic knowledge of disease processes including the ability to identify gross lesional changes. Knowledge sufficient to identify cases requiring review with input from the Pathologists' Assistant Supervisor and/or pathologist and knowledge of issues that must be addressed in each type of gross evaluation.
