Principal Embedded Control System Architect

Lexington, United States MIT Lincoln Laboratory Full time

The Advanced Lasercom Systems and Operations Group designs, prototypes, analyzes, and tests laser communication systems suitable for a variety of government platforms. Our research team develops techniques to mitigate fluctuations in signal power caused by turbulence and to lessen wavefront distortions. We perform atmospheric modeling and simulation, and build accurate acquisition, tracking, and pointing subsystems to support highly directional, low-probability-of-intercept communication links. Our major efforts include the demonstration of a low-cost, high-performance airborne laser communications terminal and development of a test capability to ensure interoperability among terminals.

Job Description:

The Advanced Lasercom Systems and Operations Group is seeking a full time principal embedded control system architect to play a pivotal role in full stack design and creation of embedded controllers for a variety of hardware actuators and sensors for Pointing, Acquisition and Tracking (PAT) systems.   Your responsibilities will encompass the full spectrum of system design, from conceptualization to deployment. Key duties include crafting real-time operating systems, developing low-level drivers, and ensuring seamless integration for both testing and operational deployment of PAT systems.

In addition to your technical expertise, you will serve as a liaison between Lincoln Laboratory and industry partners, representing our institution at various workshops and conference with the space industry. It will be your responsibility to maintain a comprehensive understanding of latest advancements in space technology, aligning them with our development objective to drive innovation and guide industry in development of next generation space controller hardware.

Requirements:

·      Masters of Science in Electrical or other Engineering discipline, Physics, Aero/Astro or similar discipline in relevant field with at least 5 years of hand-on experience in embedded systems architecture (or Bachelors with 7+ years of experience)

·      Experience in interfacing with hardware components, designing communication protocols, and integrating sensors and actuators into the overall system architecture

·      Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with industry partners and represent Lincoln Laboratory at conferences and workshops

Additional Requirements:

- Certificate or Experience in Systems Administration

- Experience in Linux, Kickstart, OpenLDAP, ssh, DNS, Ansible, DHCP, NFS, traceroute, iptables, NoMachine, etc.

- Knowledge of the Linux kernel and kernel configurations, buildroot, busybox, crosstools-ng or similar

- Willingness to work with custom hardware and tailor a real-time Linux kernel to work with that hardware.  Develop and integrate device drivers using Device Tree Source and working with hardware vendors to understand and integrate their drivers to our embedded Linux kernel.

- Familiarity in repository and packaging tools, configuring and maintaining network switches

- Work with the PAT development team on designing and deploying a development network in support of PAT work that is fully compliant with the Department of Defense's Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) and NIST Cybersecurity Framework.

- Works with the group's IT team and the Laboratory's Security Services Department to help them understand the needs of the embedded development team and tailor how the policies get enforced for test and development.
