Job Summary Oberlin College invites applicants for the position of electronics specialist in the science division of the College of Arts and Sciences. This position is a full-time Administrative and Professional Staff position reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and under the direct supervision of the chairperson of the Department of Physics & Astronomy. Responsibilities The incumbent will organize, equip, and stock an electronics service facility, repair and perform maintenance on electrical equipment and electronics in the full range of instruments in the science division including mass, infrared, visible, and ultraviolet spectrometers, a powder x-ray diffractometer, scanning electron and confocal microscopes, laser sources and associated computers. For some instruments, the electronics repair specialist will supplement manufacturers’ service contracts. General duties include scheduling of work and the normal bookkeeping functions associated with operation of a shop and stockroom facility. In addition to primary work for the departments of Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Geosciences, Neuroscience, Physics & Astronomy, and Psychology, electronic and electrical instrument repair may be undertaken for other areas of the College as time permits.

Applicants should have training and a strong background in both analog and digital electronics. Previous experience in repair and maintenance of scientific instruments will receive special consideration. Essential Job Functions Marginal Job Functions Required Qualifications A Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related field, or an Associate’s degree with at least four years of work experience. Desired Qualifications Professional experience in repair of electronic and electrical equipment. Basic machining skills to work with our in-house machinist to build new equipment when necessary. Interest in a broad array of scientific applications, ability to work with and advise scientific researchers and students about their equipment needs.
