This opportunity is:

Location: Hilo, Hawaii

Status: Full-time

Base Hourly Rate: $23.92 to $26.01 depending on experience

In this role, you will:

Cleaning and washing prepare bodies for post-mortem examination and pathological study, using necessary solutions. Lays out surgical instruments, laboratory supplies, and specimen collection containers for post-mortem examination by a pathologist. Places bodies on autopsy tables or in refrigerated compartments using a portable hoist and stretcher. Prepares bodies for release after post-mortem examination by sewing up cavities, aspirating fluids, and cleaning bodies. Transports bodies to and from morgue refrigerators to the autopsy suite. Cleans autopsy table, storage trays, instruments, and morgue after completion of autopsy.  Maintains all instruments in clean working order and ensures servicing or replacement if needed. Dispose of chemical and biohazard waste in the appropriate containers. Prepares and maintains documentation of all morgue and autopsy service records. Takes photographs of specimens. Collects specimens for laboratory tests. Preserve specimens for storage as needed. Maintains a strong and favorable relationship with hospital staff and law enforcement partners. Practices strict adherence to standard operating procedures, laboratory safety, and infection control policies. Maintains an inventory of supplies. Places supply orders as needed. Adheres to confidentiality, safety, compliance, and legal requirements. Performs other duties as required.

All you need is:

High School Diploma Computer skills, literate with working knowledge of laboratory information systems. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills. Excellent English communication (verbal and written) skills. Ability to operate general laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: telephones, computers, automated analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes, manual and automated pipettes, and audible alarms

Physical Demands:

Moderate to heavy physical effort. Must be able to lift bodies (either alone or with the assistance of a lift or another person). Carrying, pushing, and pulling (Cadavers, gurneys, etc.) Reaching, pushing, bending, kneeling, crouching Must be able to hear, see, and respond adequately Frequent, prolonged standing, walking, sitting, and bending over. Finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination Travel to various sites as needed by auto or aircraft

Working Conditions:

Air-conditioned laboratory/morgue environment Must be able to work with cadavers in different stages of decomposition and potentially diseased organs Frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), biohazardous body fluids, and hazardous chemicals Sufficient noise and interruptions to cause distraction May be asked to work extended hours

Bonus points if you’ve got:

6-12 months of experience working in a morgue, mortuary, or pathology laboratory (or equivalent experience) preferred.
