Working hours – Daytime hours M-F, participate in after-hours on-call coverage for emergencies. Preferred skill set: Collaborative, high emotional intelligence, develops high quality relationships, objective, demonstrated ability to perform a high volume of consults in a fast-paced environment,  Familiarity with health care policy development and organizational ethics. Team-oriented professional with proven ability to work both independently and in a complex interdisciplinary environment to achieve mission goals and deadlines. Demonstrated ability to build consensus and foster change in a business setting. Training in conflict resolution or mediation is essential.

Requirements for consideration:

Terminal post-graduate degree, such as a MD, PhD or JD, in a field related to bioethics preferred; candidates with a master’s degree must have completed a fellowship.  Minimum 2 years’ experience conducting clinical ethics consultations as an independent or primary clinical ethics consultant. 2 years of clinical inpatient experience in a staff physician, nursing, social work, clinical ethicist or similar role. Training in conflict resolution or mediation is essential, experience teaching in a health care environment, familiarity with policy development and organizational ethics highly preferred. Healthcare ethics consultant-certified preferred.

Job Responsibilities:

The Clinical Ethicist provides ethics consultations in support of safe and effective quality care.  Develops, implements, maintains and evaluates ethics orientation and educational program offerings.  Ensures compliance with institutional policies, and regulatory and accreditation standards pertaining to clinical ethics and patient rights.  Researches and stays abreast of all pertinent literature and developments including medical, theological, scientific and legal that showcases advisory opinions provided by ethics consultations and the program in general. Provides hospital-wide activities and initiatives related to the ethics program. Participates in clinical ethics committees/forums and collaborates with clinical teams, patients and families to address ethical issues. Designs and distributes innovative education programs and practical tools to promote ethical practices and ethics programs. Builds effective and collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to advance the ethics program. Assists in the development, analysis and interpretation of system and hospital policies and guidelines related to healthcare ethics in compliance with relevant regulatory and accreditation standards. Provides consultation for system, hospital-wide and departmental activities, initiatives, guidelines and policy changes that relate to or impact ethics or patient rights. Reviews patient medical records, when necessary, for adherence to ethics policies and best practices. Provides guidance and advice to leadership, medical staff and staff based on the findings. May perform other duties as assigned.
