JOB DESCRIPTION:

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The Transportation Bureau enhances the quality of life in New York City by working to ensure the safe, efficient and expeditious movement of traffic throughout the city. Our actions to protect the people and reduce fear are largely centered on reducing the injuries that result from motor vehicle collisions. We work with the City's governmental, residential and business communities to improve traffic safety and expedite traffic flow through the appropriate deployment of traffic control resources and the judicious enforcement of the laws regarding parking and moving violations.

-Perform research and analysis of traffic collisions in order to ensure that members on patrol are being deployed to areas that will have the largest impact on reducing injury vehicle collisions.
-Maintain highly complex maps that show where adverse traffic safety collisions are occurring.
-Identify collision related patterns, trends, and clusters separated by mode of transportation (bicycle. pedestrian, motorcycle, etc.).
-Assist the bureau in developing tactical and operational initiatives and determining the appropriate allocation of personnel and other critical agency resources.
-Work closely with the Traffic Stat Unit to prepare the Chief of Transportation and the senior executive staff of the Transportation Bureau for the weekly Traffic Stat meetings which are held at the Jack Maple Center.

HOURS/ SHIFT:
Monday-Friday; 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Minimum Qualifications

1. A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Operations Research or a closely related field; and one year of satisfactory full-time experience in the analysis and/or research of data related to crime, criminals, criminal intelligence, and/or other social sciences in a police, judicial, or other criminal justice setting; or
2. A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Operations Research or a closely related field; and a Master’s degree from an accredited college in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Operations Research or a closely related field.
SPECIAL NOTE:

To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, individuals must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, three additional years of full time qualifying experience as described in above; or two years of full time qualifying experience as a Crime Analyst Assignment Level I.

SPECIAL NOTE:

To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III, individuals must have, after meeting the minimum requirements, five additional years of full time qualifying experience as described in above, or two years of full time qualifying experience as a Crime Analyst Assignment Level II.


Preferred Skills
The Crime Analyst must have strong communication (oral, written and visual), creative and analytical skills as well as great technical/computer skills Analyst needs to be able to locate & interpret data and must be able to repackage and present it in a way that can be easily understood by others. They should have a passion for research and a genuine desire to assist and support law enforcement in preventing and solving crimes.
