Job Title: Controller
Job Description: As the Controller at Freedom, you are the financial steward, leading and directing critical aspects of our organization's financial landscape. Responsible for all financial operations, accounting, accounts payable/receivable, tax management, financial forecasting, budgeting, and the oversight of the commissions process, your role is pivotal in ensuring fiscal health, strategic financial growth, and aligning incentives with business objectives. While overseeing the HR department is a component of your responsibilities, HR management is a minor function, as there is a dedicated HR manager and department.
Career Path: Controllers at Freedom have diverse growth opportunities within the Finance department, ranging from Chief Financial Officer to Director of Finance.
Job Responsibilities
Financial Leadership:
- Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and controls.
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations and financial reporting.
- Manage accounts payable and receivable processes.
- Lead the annual budgeting and financial forecasting processes.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and manage tax planning and reporting.
Commissions Oversight:
- Oversee the commissions process, ensuring accuracy and alignment with business objectives.
- Provide financial insights to enhance the effectiveness of the commissions process.
Strategic Financial Planning:
- Play a key role in developing and executing financial strategies aligned with business goals.
- Provide financial analysis to support decision-making at the executive level.
- Assess and mitigate financial risks, ensuring the overall financial health of the organization.
Financial Reporting and Analysis:
- Prepare and present financial reports, analyses, and forecasts to executive leadership.
- Interpret financial data for various stakeholders, offering insights and recommendations.
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of financial records and statements.
Internal Controls and Compliance:
- Establish and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard financial assets.
- Ensure compliance with accounting principles, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.
Cost Management:
- Monitor and control costs to optimize resource allocation and efficiency.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings without compromising quality.
Audit Coordination:
- Collaborate with external auditors to facilitate timely and accurate audits.
- Address audit findings and implement recommendations for improvement.
Treasury Management:
- Oversee cash flow management, ensuring liquidity and financial stability.
- Manage relationships with financial institutions.
Human Resources:
- Provide strategic guidance to the HR department, focusing on alignment with organizational goals.
- Collaborate with the HR manager to foster a positive workplace culture.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Collaborate with executive leadership to align financial strategies with overall business objectives.
- Work closely with department heads to support their financial needs and objectives.
- Foster effective communication and collaboration between Finance and HR departments.
Team Leadership:
- Manage and mentor finance and HR staff, fostering a culture of excellence.
- Provide ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
- Ensure high performance, engagement, and adherence to best practices.
Continuous Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for process improvement in financial operations.
- Stay abreast of industry trends and changes in financial regulations.
- Implement best practices to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of financial processes.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
- CPA designation preferred.
- Proven experience in financial management, accounting, and budgeting.
- Strong understanding of tax planning and reporting.
- Experience overseeing commission processes.
- Collaborative approach to aligning commissions with business goals.
- Demonstrated experience in HR leadership and strategy.
- Knowledge of HR laws and regulations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Exceptional organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Proficiency in financial management software, CRM, and HRIS systems.
- Previous experience managing a team.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ideal Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
- Previous experience in a Controller or similar leadership role.
