Position Summary
Description and Desired Qualifications
Serve as a key team member in supporting habitat restoration projects, biological surveys, and environmental compliance. Show experience in implementing habitat restoration mitigation and monitoring plans and monitoring for habitat restoration success. Must be able to identify common local vegetation types including both native and non-native plant species in a variety of habitats throughout California. Familiarity with botanical data collection procedures (e.g., point/line intercept transects, quadrat sampling, CRAM); statistical design and analysis, interpretation, and document presentation; experience in USFWS/CDFW documentation and consultation support a plus; wetland delineations a plus.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of CA plant species and ecosystems.
- Ability to implement habitat restoration plans and habitat mitigation and monitoring plans, and associated matrices for tracking compliance.
- Experience with construction monitoring, compliance reporting, and worker environmental awareness training.
- The successful candidate MUST be able to identify bird species both by sight and sound.
- Demonstrate knowledge and experience with federal and state regulations, including CEQA/NEPA, CDFW Code, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Acts.
- Ability to implement project mitigation requirements, coordinating with project team and construction supervisors, and maintaining schedules as it relates to construction or habitat restoration progress.
- Provide a high-level of quality control.
- Demonstrate ability to complete projects on time and within budget.
- Demonstrate strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving, and research capabilities.
- Demonstrate confidence in dealing with clients, regulators, and team members.
- Rigorously detail-oriented and committed to accuracy.
- Ability to travel regionally. In addition, as this position could involve field work to remote areas, the applicant must be able to travel to and work in rugged terrain during inclement weather.
Assist with administrative duties, such as training to meet project requirements.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Must demonstrate technical skills in restoration, plant ecology, or botany. Demonstrate initiative, independent thinking, good problem-solving skills, excellent field skills, and educational background in plant biology. Possess ability to work independently and as a team member, and exemplary work habits, especially related to safety, common sense, punctuality, and adaptability. Demonstrate excellent organization and communication skills. Demonstrate strong relationships with clients and confidence in consulting with contractors, agencies, and regulators. Demonstrate strong and accurate writing skills. Demonstrates experience in conducting surveys and monitoring for mitigation success criteria. Provide positive and enthusiastic attitude.
Education And Experience
A bachelor's degree in an environmental field required. Approximately 1-3 years of experience local experience in biological tasks in environmental consulting (Lab-related biology degrees and experience need not apply.) Must have knowledge and experience with state and federal ESA and MBTA. CRAM cert, OSHA 30 or 40 hour, QSP/QSD cert, arborist cert is a plus.
About On-Call Employment
Given the seasonal or project-specific nature of our environmental work, HANA often hires environmental professionals as "On-Call" employees. On-Call employees are scheduled for work hours as they become available (we usually schedule work hours a few weeks ahead of time), and each on-call employee is free to accept or refuse the hours assigned to them in a given week. On-Call employees may work concurrent projects outside of their HANA assignment (along as their outside work does not create a conflict of interest with the work they do for HANA).
