There are about 2,300 undergraduate students who make up the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. Out of the Corps of Cadets, one out of three graduates earn a military commission. Students can choose from 31 majors, 57 minors, pre-health professions, and pre-law. Another 1,200 students attend The Graduate College, evening and online programs. Position Summary
This position has primary accountability for the development and implementation of a strategic plan for the future of the Honors Program and its partnership with The Citadel’s Distinguished Scholars Program. The Honors Program at The Citadel is known for excellence in producing highly accomplished Citadel graduates and for the overall enhancement of the intellectual environment on campus. In addition to cultivating academic excellence and intellectual community among the approximately 100+ students in the Honors Program, this position oversees The Citadel’s Distinguished Scholars Program which is a program that fosters intellectual discourse and global citizenship to aid scholars in securing fellowships and graduate study at prestigious institutions. The Honors Director provides institutional leadership for the administration, ongoing development, and expansion of a multidisciplinary Honors Program that offers enhanced curricular and co-curricular opportunities for students. Working in partnership with faculty, admissions, financial aid and other key areas of the institution, the Director oversees curricular strategies and student progress. This is a 10-month position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Leads the development, implementation, and assessment of a coordinated, strategic approach to honors education reflective of best practices. Communicates with internal and external communities about Honors Program activities, achievements, and opportunities. Works with the Admissions Office on the recruitment and admission of students into the Honors Program and Chairs the Faculty Senate Scholarship Committee. Supervises the Director of The Distinguished Scholars Program and at least one temporary office support employee. Coordinates co-curricular and extracurricular experiences that will nurture the talents and academic well-being of high achieving students such as showcases for graduating seniors, pre-semester retreats, etc. Orients and advises Honors students, monitoring their adherence to basic requirements and arranging for interventions as needed. Prepares and manages Honors budget, monitoring and approving expenditures. Fosters membership and participation in local, regional, and national Honors organizations, including the National Collegiate Honors Council. Oversees development and maintenance of Honors Program web site. Instructs Honors courses (i.e., Freshman Seminar and Honors Upper Class Seminars). Assists with the coordination of Workshops, conferences, seminars, and symposiums. Attends Academic Affairs, Provost’s Leadership Team, and Faculty Senate meetings. Supports students’ post-graduate goals through application coaching, writing effective recommendation letters, and interview preparation.Minimum Position Requirements (including certifications, licenses, etc.):
A terminal degree with eligibility for faculty appointment at the associate or full professor level.Preferred Qualifications:
Five years of academic administrative experience.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Understanding of the nature and value of Honors education at the university level. Ability to relate and provide leadership in honors education to the administration, deans, department chairs, and general campus faculty. Ability to actively advise students and foster student engagement. Knowledge of multidisciplinary programming; knowledge of university administrative processes, inclusive of both academic and student affairs. Knowledge of the challenges faced by high achieving or gifted students, and the related trends, issues, and accepted practices. Effective management and communication skills. Excellent communication, organizational, and collaborative skills. Demonstrated computer competency and knowledge of relevant technologies.Review of applications will begin December 1, 2024.
