Job Summary

:

The Summer Scholars Program ( at Miami University is an immersive pre-college experience for academically-talented rising high school juniors and seniors which requires an intense commitment of both time and energy from each member of the staff. While responsibilities of Summer Scholars Program Counselors are similar to those of the typical Miami University Resident Assistant and Student Orientation Undergraduate Leader, the position demands a different level of involvement.
The Summer Scholars Counselors serve as ambassadors for the program and for Miami University. They closely interact with the Scholars and shape the Scholars' experience in the program. Student counselors who are highly invested in the program are vital to creating a positive experience for each student, thus successfully impacting the Summer Scholars Program as a whole.

Essential Duties:

-Develop an open and professional relationship with each participant in their family community.
-Maintain a safe atmosphere in the residence hall as well as anywhere the group travels,
-Understand, enact and enforce the policies of the University Code of Conduct, Minors on Campus Policy and the Summer Scholars Program.
-Plan and execute activities which assist participants in interacting with one another, develop new skills or knowledge, and/or familiarize participants with Miami University.
-Resolve conflicts among program participants as needed.
-Respond accordingly to crises which may arise among participants.
-Be accessible and interact with students.
-Act as a positive role model for the Scholars.
-Promote a climate that is inclusive and respectful of all participants, students, and Miami faculty and staff.
-Support Office of Admission events during the program.
-Assist with the opening and closing of the hall each session of the program.
-Participate in on-call hall duty.
-Perform bell desk duties during assigned hours.
-Assist with non-prescription medicine distribution as needed.
-Report problems with, or damages to the facilities.
- Cooperate with maintenance staff in achieving a healthy physical environment within the community.
-Assist the Offices of Admission and Residence Life in various administrative tasks such as evaluations, surveys, and the distribution of material to participants.
-Follow emergency procedures as appropriate.
Training:
-Participate in all training sessions: July 5, 2023 - July 8, 2023
Miscellaneous:
-Attend daily meetings with staff, scholars and one-on-one meetings with supervisory staff as needed.
-Optional: Have a clean driving record, be an experienced driver willing to complete training for 12-passenger vans, and transport participants to events, programs, and activities.
-Assume other responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

A successful applicant will typically have experience as a Miami University RA or SOUL although such experience is not required; have completed at least one year of study at Miami University by May 15; and have sophomore standing by the start of the program. Junior standing at Miami is preferred, but not required. This is a live-in position for the entire term of the appointment. Room and board is provided for the residential experience.


Mandatory staff training prior to the program will be July 5, 2023 - July 8, 2023. Counselors are on duty for the duration of the program: July 9, 2023 - July 22, 2023. Six counselors will be appointed for a third week to work with the second half of the two-week academic units. They will be on duty from July 9, 2023 - July 29, 2023.


Selected students must complete a finger printed State of Ohio background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

Apply through Student Employment (PageUp) by April 14, 2023 for priority consideration. Interviews will be conducted as soon as possible upon receipt of application materials in order to identify staff in a timely manner. Applicants must be a current Miami student. Students who graduate from Miami in May 2023 are not eligible.
