Position Description

Under supervision, the Equipment Technician I performs preventive maintenance and general repair tasks. Assists more experienced technicians with a variety of technical and mechanical repairs on a wide variety of vehicles. 

Scope of Responsibility:
The Equipment Technician I performs work on high value equipment where proper preventive maintenance is necessary in order to preserve assets and avoid injuries attributable to equipment failure.

Primary Responsibilities

Follows standard procedures to perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and/or equipment including safety compliance checks, in order to ensure safe and efficient operation.Transports and test drives equipment while performing vehicle safety inspections to ensure proper function;Diagnoses various equipment and vehicles when malfunctions occur by communicating with onboard computers and/or utilizing other testing devices;Confers with experienced technicians on appropriate maintenance or repair procedures;Records time, parts, tools and equipment used for maintenance or repairs;Completes necessary forms and enters appropriate information into the fleet management system to document tasks performed. Assists more experienced technicians with segments of larger repair projects.Rebuilds or repairs components found on the different types of vehicles operated by various Departments; this includes gasoline and diesel engines, pumps, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, conveyor systems, heating/AC systems, electrical systems, electronic/computer systems, transmissions, gear cases, boiler systems, valves, etc.;Fabricates parts and special tools needed to perform repairs or to rebuild equipment according to self-design or blue print specifications which include welding metallic materials and/or operating various metal working machinery;Looks for opportunities to improve methods or designs in order to improve the performance and/or maximize the operational life of equipment; provide input regarding specifications for new equipment. Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.Communicates with others in the work unit to provide information relating to work assignments and progress of work or to convey information about conditions or work related needs; Frequently interacts with others in the work unit to exchange detailed and/or technical information. Assists other Public Works Departments with operational duties as needed. Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices.Knows and follows department and city rules as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss;Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists and utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing work;When potentially unsafe conditions are observed makes efforts to avoid or correct them if they are controllable and draws them to the attention of the responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner. Performs other duties and activities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The job requires an associate's degree in an appropriate mechanical specialty, such as automotive and diesel technology, and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Substantial progress toward an associate's degree in automotive or diesel technology and prior related work experience are preferred. A valid CDL (Commercial Driver's License) with appropriate endorsement (s) is also required or must be able to obtain within six months from date of hire. Incumbent will also be required to furnish a complete set of hand tools needed to complete the essential duties of the position.
 
Knowledge, skills and ability include:

Knowledge of proper and safe procedures of hazardous materials handling including storage and disposal according to federal regulation; Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in the work place; Knowledge of machine shop practices, welding and other metal working techniques; Knowledge of concepts, principles and techniques relating to the operation, maintenance and repair of a wide range of automotive and diesel equipment; Knowledge of engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, brake systems, HAVC, fuel injection, electrical, electronic and computer diagnostics; Knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations; Skill in basic mathematical computations to make precise measurements and develop repair estimates; Skill in welding, cutting and other metal working techniques; Skill in operating general computer software programs and accessing onboard computer systems; Skill in written English sufficient to read technical manuals, instructions and/or record pertinent information concerning repairs; Skill in communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interactions with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and receive work direction.

Physical Demands

Most work is performed in a shop environment, but will include outdoor work. Work varies from moderate to very heavy and requires lifting, pushing, pulling and climbing. There is regular exposure to multiple very disagreeable working conditions such as extreme weather conditions, dust, dirt, mud, fumes, and loud noise. There is regular exposure to hazardous chemicals and fuel, fumes, electrical hazards, moving equipment, vehicles, and slippery conditions. 
 
Activities include stooping, standing, kneeling, balancing, pushing, pulling, reaching, lifting, walking, climbing, digital dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, repetitive motions.
 
Very Heavy Work: Physical demands are normally those associated with very heavy work: Exerting up to pounds of force frequently and/or 50 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
