Job Summary

The position is responsible for strategically leading information technology (IT) support and development for the scientific and engineering departments at the institution. This person will direct IS staff in establishing strong working relationships with key individuals throughout the research organization and collaborating to implement various IT solutions to ensure needs are met and high service levels are maintained. This position will also support the Marine Facilities and Ship Operations department IT needs as well as some administrative systems. Both commercial and custom applications will be supported and deployed with various technologies including laboratory systems, embedded applications, databases, web sites, SaaS applications, and artificial intelligence.

Essential Functions

Direct and manage IS staff in support of providing IT for science, engineering and administrative functions at the institution
Develops appropriate strategies, roadmaps, processes and procedures that support science and engineering computing by ensuring reliable, efficient and secure software applications and systems Works collaboratively with the user community to identify IT needs, develop strategies and implement solutions. These solutions may include enhancements to existing applications and systems, new software packages, and/or custom programs Works closely with WHOI Science and Engineering leaders and other stakeholders to set strategies/visions, prioritize IT needs and implementations In conjunction with supported functions, develop and maintain documentation, procedures, security materials, and training of staff members and end users Communicates institutional requirements to vendors and outside organizations, and is the primary communicator of project status, risks, issues, and expectations to management Acts as an active leader on the IS leadership and management team Maintains and conveys professional expertise in computing systems and technology

Education & Experience

Required

Education

Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and/or Computer Science

Experience

15+ years of progressively responsible management experience (or equivalent combination of education/experience) including experience with system installation, configuration, administration, and integration; and project management.

Direct personnel and functional management experience required.
Experience implementing and supporting both cloud and on-premises systems

Soft skills

Must possess strong collaborative and mentoring skills
Must be a goal-oriented, highly motivated self-starter with a strong orientation to customer service

Desired

Experience with project management and application development methodologies preferred

Demonstrated effective vendor management and experience with information technology providers
