Summary:

We are currently searching for a Research Specialist to support the Quantitative Genomics shared resources lab. This opportunity is a full-time position onsite in Ashburn, VA. We are looking for a conscientious and self-motivated scientist who works well in a team environment and is eager to learn and improve their skills in a fast-paced work setting. This position offers the opportunity to develop new skills and learn best practices while gaining experience using the latest technologies. 

About the role:

In this role, you will contribute to the Quantitative Genomics service mission by performing a wide range of advanced procedures and techniques to support upstream workflows, including tissue dissection from a variety of organisms, FACS and manual cell sorting, microdissection, nucleic acid isolation, and single-cell processing, as well as downstream library preparation, sequencing, and analysis. This would be an excellent role for a scientifically-minded professional with strong molecular biology technical skills who is interested in contributing to a team and supporting the research efforts underway on the Janelia Research Campus.

About Quantitative Genomics:

The Quantitative Genomics lab is a shared resource lab that provides a wide variety of expert services, including tissue dissection, microscopy, cell isolation, single-cell assays, transcriptome and epigenetic profiling, and genome assembly using next-generation sequencing platforms from Illumina & PacBio, and many more applications are in development. Our goal is to serve as a gateway to the rapidly evolving technologies for high-content genomic analysis for both experts and novices. What you’ll do:

Perform macro and microdissection, cell sorting and capture, microscopy, and single-cell assays.

Support lab efforts by routinely employing molecular biology techniques including, but not limited to PCR, qPCR, RNA/DNA isolation, gel electrophoresis, and primer design.

Operate a variety of complex instrumentation, including microscopes, vibratomes, FACS, liquid handling automation, and NGS sequencers.

Perform high quality cDNA and library construction, including RNA/DNA purification and quality control using various instruments, including Qubit, Bioanalyzer, TapeStation, and Femto Pulse.

Assist in the daily operation of the Quantitative Genomics lab by maintaining lab stocks, supplies and equipment, and other duties as assigned.

Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions on topics applicable to work performed in the shared resource.

What you bring:

MS in Biology or related discipline; plus 2 years of experience in next-generation sequencing and/or related field. An equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience will be considered.

Experience performing tissue dissections, cell dissociation, nuclei prep, and proficiency in a wide variety of sample preparation methods.

Capable of rapidly adapting to a variety of specimens and projects, often in parallel.

Strong initiative, self-motivation, and capacity for creative problem solving.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Strong organizational skills, multi-tasking skills, and time management skills.

Strong attention to detail and recordkeeping skills.

Knowledge of Linux commands, Python, R or other bioinformatic tools are a plus.

Physical Requirements

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances or other hazardous materials.

$67,540.00 (minimum) - $84,400.00 (midpoint) - $109,780.00 (maximum)

HHMI’s salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
