Tutor, Writing Center

Position Summary

Writing tutors assist clients with any writing task at any stage of the writing process. The focus is on sharing strategies with examples rather than doing the work for the client. Tutors work for 8 hours a week. Major Preferred Undergraduate students of all majors may apply. Experience Required -Must be at least a second semester first-year
-Must provide a cover letter that discusses interest in position and qualifications
-Must submit the name of a faculty reference
-Must provide an academic writing sample
-E-mail cover letter, faculty reference, and academic writing sample to Ryan Rickrode, Director of the Writing Center (rrickrode@messiah.edu)

Experience Preferred -Familiarity with Messiah’s Writing Center (i.e. past visits to the center to receive tutoring)
-Experience assisting others with writing in-progress Skills, Characteristics Required for Position -Strong knowledge of the skills, concepts, and conventions associated with academic writing, especially thesis-driven essays and research papers
-Excellent interpersonal skills
-Ability to get along with co-workers and to work as part of a team
-Ability to take initiative and to work reliably and independently
