Endoscopy Technician III

Processes endoscopes, specialty scopes, and accessories according to manufacturer’s instructions and hospital policies performing both high level disinfection and scope troubleshooting. Plans scope turnaround times to meet patient care needs based on the Perioperative Services’ ENDO daily procedural schedule and physicians’ needs/requests based on extensive knowledge of procedural scope use, departmental procedural policies, turnaround times, inventory PAR levels, and quality assurance. Serves as an endoscopic scope expert mentoring new endoscope processors and serving as a preceptor in the training and development of physicians, fellows, residents, or students. Covers ENDO processing call as needed to meet departmental operational needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Must completed successful Endoscopy Technician training program within 90 days of hire.

3. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.

4. Must obtain HSPA Certified Registered Central Sterile Processing Technician (CRCST) upon hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE:

1. Four (4) years of Instrumentation, equipment, or endoscopy experience.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Cleans/processes endoscopes, specialty scopes, and accessories according to manufacturer’s instructions in accordance with departmental policy and procedure, infection control standards, manufacturer’s instructions (IFUs), and state/federal regulations. May serve as a preceptor in the training and development of new employees, transfers, physicians, fellows, residents, or students.

2. Operates all sterilization, high-level disinfection, and decontamination equipment, in accordance with departmental policy and procedures safely and efficiently.

3. Performs high level disinfection and endoscope/specialty scope troubleshooting. Plans scope turnaround times to meet patient care needs based on the Perioperative Surgical daily schedule and physician’s needs/requests.

4. Discerns and distinguishes colors to identify bio burden on instruments, scopes, and equipment.

5. Restocks accurately procedural carts/work areas with scopes, accessories, and supplies. Provides input into suitable substitutes for service products and inventory PAR levels.

6. Checks the expiration dates and or hang times of scopes, accessories, and supplies.

7. Stages and delivers procedural carts, stocking carts, and equipment. Maintains egress corridors.

8. Inventories and maintains adequate levels of disinfectants and scope cleaning solutions utilized in the ENDO workroom.

9. Reports and records missing and/or damaged instrumentation, scopes, and equipment, in accordance with set policy and procedure. Handles select equipment inventory including repairs, loaners, etc.

10. Serves as an expert contact person for questions concerning scope decontamination, high level disinfection, and sterilization. Provides input into policy and procedural updates.

11. Answers, records, and responds via phone and/or in person in a courteous and professional manner. Phone requests are to be answered following WVU Medicine’s Standards of Behavior.

12. Receives and returns unexpired items to inventory, in accordance with set policy and procedure.

13. Daily maintains work area(s) in a clean, neat, and orderly fashion.

14. Cleans work area prior to end of shift in preparation for the oncoming shift.

15. Records and maintains required sterilization records and QA logs such as manometry catheter processing log. Performs and maintains records of daily quality assurance checks on endoscopy and specialty scopes/equipment.

16. Cleans and tracks procedural carts, scope containers, and transport bins. Utilizes computer software to track scope processing.

17. Attends regularly scheduled in-services and staff meetings. May serve as a subject matter expert.

18. Participates in the cross training for new scopes, accessories, supplies, and equipment. Serves as a competent observer for annual staff competencies. Mentors new endoscope processors.

19. Performs audits/scope testing.

20. Covers ENDO processing call as needed to meet departmental operational needs.

3. Must possess visual/ oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability to perform work functions such as reading IFUs to process instrumentation and scopes as well as to communicate with other healthcare providers.

4. Must be able to discern and distinguish colors.

1. Must be able to work in a high stress environment wearing surgical attire and PPE appropriate for work areas.

2. Must be able to enter a patient care environment during surgical or procedural case to troubleshoot instrumentation or scope issues.

3. Must be able to handle chemicals, disinfectants, and other solutions used for sterilization and high level disinfection.

4. Weekday, weekend, and holiday call as needed.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Must be able to operate computer programs with training such as instrument tracking system and scope cleaning software; able to use necessary departmental/hospital software applications including knowledge of automated supply chain and OR scheduling information system applications.

2. Must have the ability to follow written and verbal directions.

3. Team-centered professional communications with physicians, nurses, technicians, and other customers.

4. Strong problem solving and organizational skills.

5. Knowledge of infection control principles applicable in hospital setting.

6. Must be able to perform multi-step procedures and prioritize work tasks.
